Modernist and Fundamentalist Discourses of Islam
The modernist and fundamentalist discourses of Islam differ pretty much in major issues. The views also differ in such questions as freedom of opinion. The cornerstone is about who is deprived of rights and freedoms and whether they are really deprived of these rights.
Western societies consider hijab to be abusing for women. They believe that it deprives the honor and respect of a woman. Mutahhari states that the idea that a woman must sit in a corner of the house absolutely does not relate to Islam. They are free to gather and discuss different issues; moreover they are encouraged to take part in the society life. But the family issues and tranquility must remain the first priority for every wife. Women are obliged to wear and to behave in a way that would not compromise them in the eyes of other people, this is their key duty. For that Islam provides liberation and equality for them in the majority of issues except very few.
Khan looks at the issue of the freedom of opinion through another problem: intellectual pluralism. He states that everybody is entitled to freedom of opinion. People who share different religion cannot be blamed for their opinions about the sacred and divine, notwithstanding their liability to mistake and error. Wisdom can be achieved only by making mistakes and correcting them. Discussions and controversy can give birth to a true teaching. Thus, the major task of every Muslim is to multiply and to preserve the exercise of intellectual scrutiny. Allah encouraged people to obtain new knowledge and new ideas from the others except those that may have influence on their faith.
