What is Diversity?
Diversity is a combination of different demographic features that constitute an organization’s workforce, in terms of gender, culture, beliefs, nationality, age, religion and race. 1
Strategic Vision
As a Chief Diversity Officer of ABC Corporation, my strategic vision for the organization is to build a unified and coherent team that is culturally diversified and which brings the best out of its employees by providing them with a friendly, comfortable, diverse and unbiased work environment.
Diversity Strategy
The strategy to manage ‘Workforce Diversity’ is to hire more diverse and culturally aware staff that will increase number of perspectives and opinions in the office, open more lines of communication with more groups, which in turn will increase the overall productivity. Another goal is to provide the necessary diversity training to the existing staff in the corporation. Diversity training would ensure that the overall productivity of the organization increases through the active participation of its employees. An elaborate diversity training program would also ensure that the overall image of the corporation improves in the business market.
Strategic Initiatives
Open Door Policy – The best initiative to strategically handle workforce diversity is by introducing an ‘Open Door Policy’. There will be times when employees will feel being treated unfairly either by their colleagues, immediate boss, client or a vendor. The best way to combat such slip-ups and to ensure a healthy employee environment is by introducing an ‘Open Door’ policy which makes the affected employees more comfortable and results in higher productivity.
Workforce Diversity Trainings – Trainings and workshops are the best way of managing diverse workforce. Any organization that is sincerely committed to diversity training is bound to succeed in tough and turbulent business environment.2
The exercises and various stimulating games provide an insight and learning to workforce management. Employees learn the spirit of working in diversified teams along with people who belong to different culture and demographics. Also, a communications training must be included that would train the people in dealing with ‘culture shocks’ and how to build , improve and maintain good relationships with foreign stakeholders belonging to different nationalities.
Diversity team building re-treat – Planning a day out for a team building, ‘Diversity Re-treat’ is one of the best ways by which employees get to interact and know each other in a recreational setting. A facilitator can be appointed who could initiate a discussion among employees and various activities could be planned that would promote team bonding3.
Responsibilities of Chief Diversity Officer
According to me, a ‘Chief Diversity Officer’ is a person who could keep the organization intact and united in spite of its diversified culture and people. A Chief Diversity Officer needs to do the following in order to enhance his job:-
Chief Diversity Officer needs to ensure that he manages its workforce diversity without any prejudice, stereotypes and should be proactive in making some extra efforts to ensure that all the employees and related stakeholders are treated the same under the same roof.
2. He will have to ensure that the workplace layout has been designed to ensure a comfortable and independent environment. There are no cubicles or cabins and the entire floor has been designed to maximize employee interactions. In this way, all the employees would be free to interact with each other and there would be no communication barriers between them.
3. The Chief Diversity Officer needs to ensure that the organization keeps re-inventing its performance development scheme in order to ensure that there is no bias and prejudice within the system.
4. Monthly rewards & recognition sessions must be conducted in order to motivate and retain the best talent.
5. The Chief Diversity Office has to ensure that the staffing is done in such a manner that each team has equivalent number of employees with varied skill set so that each team becomes a ‘Business entity’ model and performs to best of its abilities and capabilities.
Conclusion
According to me, every multinational organization requires a diverse workforce. A workforce that has the right mix of talent, capability, views, opinions and experience is a key to any organization’s long term success. According to me, ABC Corporation must hire me as I would bring along some much needed changes that would boost the diversity of the organization. I would ensure that I create, build and sustain a strong and diverse workforce that can withstand any temporary setbacks and which has a clear strategic vision for the organization
