Social Responsibility and Ethics

Corporate social responsibility represents an ethical framework that shows that an organization or company has an underlying obligation to perform activities that benefit the community. Aviation companies that base their culture on humanity as a core value define what role that all players should engage in, in our society. Creating an extensively sustainable company will require more than the operational, financial input. Social responsibility will take a wide range of principles ranging from responsibility towards the consumers, the employees, and the entire society. Management should place more consideration on the surrounding communities who are socially vulnerable. The company will identify most appropriate social ventures and make an all-inclusive budget geared towards service delivery.

Possible Social Ventures by Aviation Companies

The aviation companies will work to support educational projects in its immediate community. The players in the industry can organize human emancipation programs that will aim at elevating the knowledge status of the people. Activities such as donation of books to different learning institutions, improving technological education by giving electronic devices to the underprivileged schools, and recruiting skilled personnel to offer extension services.
Roll out extensive charitable undertakings aimed at improving the people`s living standards. The aviation companies can participate in hunger relief programs and work to come up with plans that resolve the issue in its entirety. This may include making donations on farm input such as fertilizers and educating the local farmers on best means of production. Through its skilled personnel, the company should offer voluntary training on different life aspects to the youths of the communities. They can introduce campaigns against drug and substance abuse that may have wasted the lives of many youths. Aviation operations have led to various forms of pollution, and as a form of compensation to the community, they should initiate environment preservation undertakings. Tree planting programs will go a long way in conserving the environment.
The airline industry has a social responsibility of flying safe airplanes. The small and large aircrafts that do not meet flying standards, set to ensure that all flights are successful. Either all the aircrafts have to undergo regular maintenance or the management pulls them out of operation. Unsafe planes pose an enormous threat to the safety of not only the passengers in the planes but also the general population. They are prone to accidents and can cause massive loss of lives and huge damage to the economy, for example, when they crash into a highly populated city. Overall, the industry should prioritize the safety of all humanity.
Corporate social ethics of the aviation companies will extend into controlling different forms of environmental pollution. Operations in the industry have many side effects such as emission of pollutant gasses and creation of disruptive noise. Companies have a significant role to play in making the society a more habitable place to live. There are extensive measures taken by the industry as discussed below.

Benefits of the social responsibility program

The implementation of the community outreach program by the different aviation companies will affect a strategic advantage that works to improve all its operations. The Public image of participating airline companies will develop. The outside world will now view the company as one that is not only profit oriented but focuses on improving lives of communities in its surrounding location and the entire society. The outreach social programs will touch many people depending on the nature of the projects and its scale. Projects formulation based on available funds set aside by the aviation company, for operations in the whole process. Research has shown that the business enterprises image is forever at the mercy of corporate community projects that it undertakes. The worldwide consumer bases have placed their loyalty in companies that participate in helpful programs geared towards improving the community. Adding to the fact that the programs are voluntary based, the players in the aviation industry who choose to take it, as an obligation will catch the rewarding public eye. Flying unsafe aircrafts

The different plane body and engine manufacturers follow a distinctive well-evaluated procedure during the production of the different aircraft parts. Entire aircraft has to meet certain criteria before its release into the market. Cases, however, arise of malfunctioning aircrafts due to appearing technicalities in its operation. A plane that has not undergone active maintenance is not fit for flying. A pilot who takes flying in such planes endangers their life and is prone to fatal accidents. The different aviation companies have outlined mechanisms for identifying faulty aircrafts as a means of achieving their objective of zero deaths due to technical failures of aircrafts.

Pilot responsibilities

An airline pilot for both the small and the large aircrafts have varying responsibilities that will ensure that they work to fit their job description. The technicality of the profession dictated by the different aviation regulators aimed at safeguard operations in the industry, and lay out defined responsibilities. The Federal Aviation Administration in collaboration with Civil Aviation Authorities has set out a detailed list of responsibilities that new and already working pilots have to comply. The list guides the different players in the industry including the aviation schools and worldwide airways companies. Overall responsibility of the pilot underpins the need to maintain the safety of all passengers in case of a commercial flight and safe delivery of freight to required destination.
It is the responsibility of a pilot to maintain a high professional image in terms of their conduct, on and off duty. The pilots cannot afford to participate in under dealings that tarnish their name and that of the cooperation where they work. Pilots have a preflight responsibility of checking the weather from the airport to the designated landing airport to ensure that it is safe and thus only fly under manageable conditions.
They have a responsibility to file a detailed flight plan as per the regulators and the company`s guidelines. This works to ensure that they are very much on toes on the requirements of the flight they expect to make and have worked on all technicalities that may arise. Flight plans also give a timeline that they adhered to during the entire flying process. In extension to a flight plan, the pilots have another responsibility of filing a post flight report upon a set timeline after completion of the trip. The report will detail all undertakings during the flight and any technicalities that may have arisen in the flying process. The description is on a time base and is supported by crew members involved the flight. The pilots notify flight coordinators upon flight completion.
During a flight, the pilot has a responsibility on all operation mechanisms within the plane. In some of the situations, with the support of the co-pilot, they have the responsibility to watch over the technical flying instruments. Through their training, they have gained proficient skills in handling the complicated apparatus. They have to remain focused on readings made on the different instruments and make necessary adjustments where necessary.
It is the pilot's responsibility to involve crewmembers in the decision-making process, even though, the final action lies upon his call. This will work to ensure that critical decisions made en-route have the best of interest of the passengers and the aviation companies. The pilot will report to air-route control stations that will feed them with the necessary information to guide a safe landing.
Pilots have a responsibility of confirming all necessary arrangements made by Flight Coordinators with crucial information on planned date, time of flight, and the airport. With the help of other airport personnel, the pilot must ensure that all the passengers have signed a liability form in due time before embarking on the flight. Pilots have a responsibility of notifying passengers on meeting place and the timing.
Pilots should run a comprehensive checklist before the flight of various systems such as engines functionality, fuel amount, electronics, and hydraulics performance. They liaise with engineers, cabin crew, and the controllers. Pilots have a responsibility to make quick and vital decisions in a changing situation during the flight.

Aviation pollution

Mainland airports encounter massive movements of passengers by the millions, coupled with huge cargo for transportation. The benefits of air transport to the country`s economy is immense since it supports the tourism, exports, and import businesses. Authorities must, however, weigh these contributions against impacts that air travel has on the quality of life of the worldwide population. People working, living, and taking studies at locations around airports encounter noise and air pollution problems. There is a significant impact on noise pollution from aircrafts and airport ground operations. Noise from flying aircrafts arises from the moving components such as compressor blades and the engine propellers.

Air pollution

Aircrafts emit exhaust gasses that are air pollutants. , most planes engines have an efficient fuel combustion mechanism, and the exhausts have low-level smoke emissions. The primary pollutant in the areas around airports is nitrogen oxide formed from surface traffic emissions and other airport operations. The gasses cause harm to the environment as it is a greenhouse gas, which depletes the ozone layer leading to global warming. The different regulators set international standards for gaseous pollutants and smoke levels for new jet engines produced by different manufacturers. New technologies in the aviation industry have seen a reduction in emissions. Manufacturers of jet engines have applied exhaust gas re-circulation and other selective catalytic reducers. The rising number of large aircrafts operating in the industry, which have increased emissions compared to small aircrafts, poses the threat.

Noise control

As of now, the government has direct responsibility for noise management at very few airports. Increased government participation and formulation of regulations through its federal bodies will work to reduce noise pollution. The aviation regulators will set noise level criteria that each player in the aviation industry should meet.
The airline companies have worked with other organizations in the industry to roll out projects on insulating the homes of local people around the airports. This program does not reduce external noise but has worked effectively to cancel out the noise, so that the residential interiors are more noise free. The methods applied will include upgrading the roofing materials, formulating new building strategies, and glazing windows.
Measures introduced to reduce noise pollution will include setting of Noise Preferential Routes and placing of restrictions on flying during the night. Noise limits set at the different airports to cover a day period from 7a.m to 11p.m on all days. The management at the airports is directly responsible for checking and ensuring compliance with the set regulations. The regulatory agencies have set stiff financial penalties for any aviation company that breaches the set and accepted guidelines. Restriction of night flights that take place between 11p.m and 6a.m. The airline companies receive a quota of what number of trips they can make over the night and number of noisier aircrafts allowed to land over the night period.
Development of the airport infrastructure should remain controlled in terms of flight scheduling and daily air operations. Increased activities of the aviation company should not implicate on the peace of surrounding communities through noise pollution. They should make out an effective plan on how to cater the increased activities without increasing both daytime and nighttime noise exposure to the surrounding communities and the entire population. In case increase in noise exposure is unavoidable, the aviation player should entail a full-fledged mitigation measure. They offer compensation to the affected persons in the community.
The government should seek to implement regulations that reduce the social and environmental harm caused by air operations, in collaboration with aviation industry stakeholders. Government research institutions should receive sufficient funding to engage in a program of innovating new technologies that are progressive to the industry. Research findings will aim at coming up with better operation practices and effective management. Aviation companies intending to expand their operations based on existing capacity or introduction of new infrastructure should mitigate the arising social harm.
Aircraft manufacturers have collaborated with the airline industry in innovating new engines in an effort to reduce noise pollution. Modern turbo-fan engines are less noisy than turbo-jet engines. This reduces the noise pollution faced by communities around airports.
Worldwide operations to reduce environmental damage arising from operations in the aviation industry will require cooperation from all stakeholders in the international industry. Governments should actively participate in international debates as a means of encouraging the development of innovative and radical solution to the eminent aviation problems. All airline companies should adopt an active role in eradicating the threats from noise and air pollution in the industry.
