My research question is: What correlation is there, if any, between high school drop-out rates and participation in high school sports? My interest in said research question stems from my personal observation that high school drop outs tend to be participants in different high school sports sponsored by high schools. I understand that being an athlete in high school sports takes a lot of time from studying. The physical demands of being an athlete, in general, tend to preclude one from fully focusing on other activities – in this case, fulfilling different kinds of academic requirements. Thus, I inferred that the decision to drop out has become a typical route for athletes in high school sports, who I believe lose interest in their studies the more they get immersed into the sports they play.
Other questions I have in mind are the following: Up to what degree of participation in high school sports do athletes typically drop out? What are the key factors that lead athletes in high school sports to drop out? Do high school administrators have adequate measures to counter the trend of dropping out among athletes in high school sports? How can participation in high school sports be made beneficial in terms of urging athletes to carry on with their studies? What additional measures does the existing literature recommend to reduce dropout rates among athletes in high school sports?
When researching on my research question without my computer and through the library, the following LCSHs can bring me closer to the most relevant sources: dropouts (UF drop-outs, early school leavers, school dropouts; BT students, youth; NT high school dropouts), school sports (UF high school sports, interscholastic athletics, school athletics; BT physical education and training, sports; NT intramural sports) and athlete (UF sports persons, sportspeople, sportspersons; NT high school athletes). Said LCSHs stand to provide me with perhaps a multifaceted set of sources that focuses not just on my research question, but also on questions related to it as well. In such a case, I can browse through a variety of sources that may provide me with insights coming from findings on the relationship between studies and sports, information on the nature of sports in high school and its effects to students, and high school dropouts who prioritized sports over studies, among many others.
