According to The Bible for Dummies, a prophet performed several roles as a link between God and people. First, he had a responsibility of predicting the future events such as the outcome of the war, the sex of unborn baby, and the oncoming calamities among others. Secondly, he advised leaders of the day especially about the voice of God on various issues. Kings always sought the advice of the prophet before embarking on any serious course of action. Thirdly, prophets used to declare God’s oracles to the people. They used to act as God’s messagers and they could tell people what God was intending about them. Fourthly, they used to perform symbolic acts that used to pass the message of God to people. For example, Prophet Hosea was instructed to marry a prostitute as way of showing how Israelites had become unfaithful to God. Prophet Isaiah was asked to go naked for three days to show the shame and impending judgment that was just to befall the Israelites. Finally, prophets acted as agents of change. They instructed people to repent and change their behaviors in order to receive God’s mercy.
As a servant of God, I cannot avoid these roles since I would like God to use me as his agent of change in order to transform today’s world. First, preachers are God’s messagers and they must be ready to be used by him to pass his intention to the people, a role which also comes with performing symbolic acts. Therefore, I am ready to act as a messager of God. Secondly, I am ready to advise leaders in the current world so that they can make decisions that are aligned with the will of God. Finally, I am ready to predict the future through God’s inspiration.
