“Homework”, this is what the child is supposed to do when he is back from school. But

nowadays the curriculum has become so vast and complicated that it is not the children who do the homework, but the parents. Parents should not help their children with their homework. When the parents assist the young ones with their school homework then at times it is not the children who are doing the work, rather the parents end up doing it all.
The homework that is supposed to be done by the child, which is aimed at his growth and learning actually becomes the responsibility of the parents. The child at times being too young to understand the complexities of the work given to him, end up not attempting it all. And the parents who are always panicky regarding the child’s grades in school and his overall performance think that doing it on their own is the best way to get the work done.
When the child is not involved in the work done, then where does the question of his learning exist at all? What he is learning here is how his parents will always do the work assigned to him and he will just put it forward with his name on the cover page. The parents this way are making the child more and more dependent on them; he will not be able to tackle things himself, because he will know that his parents are there to do that for him. As a grown up individual he will always look back at his parents for help in every matter.
Involvement of parents in the homework brings a sense of competition among the parents of children studying in a particular class. Instead of being a mere homework which the children have to do, it becomes a thing of rivalry among the parents. They take it as a matter of pride that the work done by them is gaining appraisals from the teacher. The focus shifts from the children to the parents, who actually should have no role in the matter.
The school curriculum devises homework in a way that leaves very little or no scope for the child’s involvement in the work. So till a certain extent the school curriculum is also responsible for the problem. The education system needs to be changed.
The homework should be based on the child’s ability, not on his parents’ skills. The homework nowadays are more concerned regarding the expenditure that will be required to be made rather than the mental stimulation of the child. They learn how to beautify a model rather than how to make it a successful working project!
Thus the whole pattern of homework needs to be changed. The tasks should be given keeping in mind if the work is actually suitable for the child of that particular age, if he will be able to do it on his own. Parents should be discouraged from assisting them in a way that the child has nothing left to do in the task at all. They should confine their roles till guiding the children with the work and let them accomplish it on their own. The schools should have stricter rules against parents doing their children’s homework. The homework should be confined to the child and not include his parents.
