Bullying is an important community issue. It is a problem that must be address by the society in general. Moreover, solving it must involve schools, parents and specially the mass media. Social segregation or ruling out is an assault on the spirit of a child. It causes emotional damage that is difficult to mend. It can last a lifetime. Bullying is a serious and a lasting practice that can lead to more serious problems.
This paper uses the video ‘“From school yard bullying to genocide: Barbara Coloroso’ to further interpret the effects of bullying. In the video, genocide is regarded as an extreme effect of bullying that started at the premature phase of human socialization. Genocide is an extreme act of violence. It can be regarded as insane or even evil. Barbara Coloroso gave explanations about genocide and how can anyone change from being civil and acting normal into doing genocidal activities. Nevertheless, Barbara explained the ways of identifying that behavior and the means to get rid of the actions that can eventually lead to murder.
Research defines bullying as an unrelenting pattern of coercion and maltreatment intended for a particular person to disgrace, terrify, or separate a child. Bullying is unremitting and brutal, and every so often goes on for years. Some people describe it as a type of child exploitation committed by the peers of the child. Research also states that bullying happens mostly in schools that do not have enough grown-up supervision throughout their break-times. Bullying is also prevalent to schools where students and teachers are apathetic to or allow bullying activities, and where regulations on maltreatment are enforced incorrectly.
Bullying is manifested in many different forms counting physical intimidation or aggression; teasing and name-calling; isolation; and public assault on a person’s reputation. Bullying can be done in different means such as using the internet through mails and social networks, or even using phones through texting. It takes place in all ages but young people who experienced bullying feel alone and trapped since they do not possess the decision as to the location to play, study or live.
Movements against bullying must adopt whole-school, research-based method. Places where bullying and teasing are inappropriate can we can justly manage on this dissident, complicated societal dilemma. A consideration on handling perpetrators is also important. An approach called ‘no blame’ policy to solve bullying is a way of invigorating impartiality. This approach try to find and hold the offender responsible by making that person recognize the actual consequence of his or her actions. The perpetrator and the victim both have roles in the resolution of the problem that allows the children to have participation in the community once more.
Conditions that make genocide doable include biased laws and measures, absolute compliance of people to authority and the regulation of brutality. Though there are people who oppose and try to protect those who are murdered or maltreated, it is important that their movements must be widespread. It is important that every story must be heard, be it from communities, organizations and governments, for the perpetration of genocide. Barbara stated that standing up is better than standing by. People should get involved because it is the essence of us being a community. The community must be restored and the victims of genocide must let go of the notion of revenge and hatred. The actions of the participants and the resistance must also be studied to prevent genocide.
