In this part of the paper we should discuss and describe the results of the data processing in SPSS statistical software. We were interested to test the following research question: “If there is a significant difference in memory capacity between dyslexic and non dyslexic individuals?”
That’s why we can formulate null and alternative hypothesis:
Null hypothesis is: there is no significant difference in memory capacity between dyslexic and non dyslexic individuals.
Alternative hypothesis: there is a significant difference in memory capacity between dyslexic and non dyslexic individuals.
H0: μ1=μ2Ha: μ1≠μ2
We set the most common level of significance of 5%:
α=0.05
Before testing, we run descriptive statistics to see whether our suggestions are meaningful.
According to the table above, we can see that the mean value of absspan for those who has dyslecsia is only 5.7 compared for 13.9 to those who haven’t it. The standard deviations are 5.95686 and 10.98276. The differences between means and standard deviations are seem to be significant, that’s why we proceed with testing. We know that to test the whether the difference between mean values of 2 quantitative variables is significant, we can use Student’s t-test for independent samples. Since the standard deviations are significantly different, we erform test assuming that the variances are not equal. Assuming that the population data is normally distributed, we perform testing and obtain the following results:
Levene’s test shows whether the variances are significantly different. Since p-value of this test is only 0.003, we were right when concluded that the variances are significantly different. That’s why we look only for “Equal variances not assumed” row.
The results of the t-test are t=29.288 with p=0.006 and t=32.570 with p=0.001. Since p-values of the test are lower than chosen alpha level of significance (0.05), we reject the null hypothesis. There is enough evidence to say that there is a significant difference in memory capacity between dyslexic and non dyslexic individuals (at 5% level of significance). It is naturally to assume that since the mean value of absspan for those who has dyslexia is only 5.7 compared for 13.9 to those who haven’t it, the capacity of memory for those who has dyslexia is significantly lower than for those who are not dyslexic.
