Good Example OF The Poem Is Simple To Understand And It Explicitly Explains A Girl’s Beauty. Essay

My God, My love is a perfect example of ancient Egyptian love poem. The poem is about the innate desires of a girl who is nearby a river bank, longing to get intimate and close to her lover. The lover is addressed as “My love.” The poem uses a lot of imagery to get the message of eternal love across. What I like about the love song is that it is not a typical rhyming piece of poetry. Lucid and simple language is used but it is full of symbolism. This particular stanza is about the feelings of a young girl who is confidently expressing her sexual desires and love for her separated lover.
It’s interesting to see a girl expressing her own sexuality; “bathe myself before you.” She strongly vocalizes her desire and gives the details about what she would like to wear when she is close to her beloved. She wants to wear the best of flowing fabric, “linen” when she meets him. Her yearning is clearly evident from the poetry. At certain places there are hints about the girl preparing for an eternal journey to be united with her God or lover. Throughout in the love song semi-erotic phrases are used. Sex seemed to be important even afterlife. For the same reason the girl is getting ready for her final unison. Her hair has been tied by using reeds; this is another example that proves that she is somewhere close to a river bank.
Events from daily life have been used to express the inner desires. The girl says she will carry a “red fish” to her lover. The activity of fishing was a routine event. The red fish might have been used as a metaphor to talk about love; it may be the youth’s heart.
The male lover is also desperately waiting to get to her beloved; he is ready to risk the strong winds and turbulent waters to unite with his beloved. There are certain words which are not clear; the poem never directly relates to a woman or man as divine. It does not directly address God. The last lines create confusion as the girl addresses the lover as “my hero, my brother.” Maybe it’s a love song for God or some eternal power as a lover cannot be addressed as a brother.
