Brainstorm: Review the description of brainstorming in your textbook on pages 112–113. Then write a list of all the social media and social networking websites and apps you might use to connect with friends and family and to meet people.
Social media is the kind of socializing that has gained momentum recently. According to a 2014 study, social media is a form of communication and socialization that has a large number of users in the world in the past ten years. There are those that deal with connecting people whereas others help people find jobs, shops, and other things (McWhorter, 112).
There are, therefore, various social networking sites and apps. They include Facebook that connects friends, MySpace which also connects friends, Twitter where one posts and sends and receives messages, LinkedIn for business professionals, Bebo for uploading photos, videos and others, Friendster for connecting friends, family, colleagues and others, Hi5 has other features such as games. Additionally, there is Habbo, popular for teens aged between 13 and 18 years, Ning for activists and influencers, Classmates used at premium rates, Tagged blends both MySpace and Facebook, myYearbook for meeting new friends, and Meetup that facilitates offline meeting in different places. Furthermore, others are MyLife, Flixster, myHeritage, Multiply, Orkut, Badoo, Gaia Online, BlackPlanet, SkyRock, PerSpot, Zorpia and others (McWhorter, 113).
There are several distinctions that can be found on the sites listed above. First, there are those that deal with professional networking such as LinkedIn while others deal with any networking such as Facebook. Also, there are those dealing with instant updates on the happenings such as Twitter whereas others don’t, such as Zorpia. I will thus categorize them as Professional, Regional, Age based, Educational applications and sites and others. This is due to the type of content the sites have.
Write a thesis statement: Review “Writing Assertions” on page 115 in your textbook. Then follow the guidelines on pages 126–127 in your textbook to write an effective thesis statement based on the types of social media using the ideas you developed in the Brainstorm and Respond sections of this journal entry.
There are various types of social media in the world. The types vary according to the kind of content they have. Due to this, social media has blended itself in people’s lives successfully. It is suggested in a 2013 survey by the University College of London that in a 5-year period to come, social media will be the most used type of media in the world. It is also suggested that by then, people will have shifted entirely to rely on social media for news updates leaving the mainstream media. This is why it has gained momentum recently, and it is very hard for any new site or app to fail. A lot of people, ranging from the young of age 13 to the old of age 90, are using social media exhaustively (McWhorter, 115).
Reflect: Explain the position you’ve taken in your thesis statement and identify the items
I support the study by the University. Currently, there are a lot of social media sites that are in use. Sites like Twitter and Facebook are the most preferred. They are heavily used even in official capacities. Others that have gained momentum among the business community are LinkedIn that connects professionals and Ning that links social activists, organizers, and others in that category. Also, people are no longer waiting for news from the mainstream media houses but just log into their social media accounts and browse through latest news items (McWhorter, 127).
In conclusion, social media is taking over the world with force. It is and has proven to have an influence on the people due to its uniqueness. Through social media, people meet, socialize, connect, speak their minds and do other things that humans like. Since its inception during the early 2000s, it has proven that in the next 5 or so years, most of its applications will be a household name.
