Good Example Of Three Gorges: The Biggest Dam In The World Essay
The Yangtze River is the longest and largest river in China. Small tributaries such as Tuotuo River join to give rise to the Yangtze River. The river is said to flow from the snow-dropped southwest Geladandolog. It flows from west to east, passing through the three gorge areas. Over the years, the River has been causing floods every rainy season, and thousands of lives are usually lost. China industries are growing at a constant rate, thus it needs more clean supply of energy to meet the demand from the growing industries. As a result, the Chinese government had to find a solution to both challenges. The use of advanced technology was the answer that was used to build one of the biggest dams ever constructed in China by River Yangtze to protect more loss of lives. The dam will also help the government to produce clean energy to meet the demand of growing industries. This paper will be giving an overview on the Three Gorges Dam project in River Yangtze.
Engineers and other stakeholders who were interested in the Yangtze Sea River technically analyzed all the impacts of the dam the proposed project began. Then the Engineers found that the best location of the dam was at the three gorges area; thus the name Three Gorges Dam. Once completed, the dam size will be almost one and half miles long opening the way for big ships to sell inland. This project woul have several impacts on the residences and to the government. For instance, Three Gorges Dam will be able to produce energy that will meet a quarter of the energy demanded by industries in the whole of China. This project will employee thousands of people during construction and after the project would be completed. Additionally, people’s lives will be protected from floods that have been the biggest challenge.
There would arise one or two negative impacts resulting from the development of the dam. To start with, the cultural activities and norms of the Chinese people who lived along the River would be distorted. This is due to the fact that most of the area would be replaced by the Three Gorges Dam water. Nonetheless, the Chinese government would build them better houses on higher grounds that are free from floods. In addition, there would be improved road accessibility to this remote area of China. As a result, both sides of the local people and the government will be benefiting from this complex project.
The most interesting parts of this video is how the engineer applyies the use of advanced technology to solve the rising problem during construction. The project has several sub-section, starting from the construction of hydropower generation stations to construction of gate locks for ships to pass. In every step starting from a survey, a location geologist would be involved to predict the base rocks and geographical nature of the rocks. In addition, the geologist had to assure the project managers the effects of the dam will be beneficial to the ecosystem. The geologist helps the engineers to find a solution of sentiments that may fill in the dam to prevent it dam from breaking the base; hence claiming more lives and properties. As a result, the engineer builds the base gate rocks that allows more water to flow out during the floods season. This helps to reduce the ground slit and waterAdditionally, the engineers also have to assure the government and the local people the benefits gained from the projectd last for many years.
Equally important is the show of organization and management of the event during construction. All the events are supposed to take place the way they are expected. Workers from different disciplines work around the clock to meet the deadline of the project. Most importantly is the ways in which the workers combine their skills during work, thus giving no room for errors and mistakes The hard work and combination of their skills improves efficiency of work as it is anticipated by the engineer.
Once Three Gorges Dam will be completed, I believe it will open more opportunities to the Chinese people. This is due to the development of towns along the River Yangtze will expands in terms of industries and trading areas. Big ships will be able to sail to remote towns to supply raw material, and transport finished products that are manufactured to the international market. Moreover, the government will be able to reduce environmental pollution from the large amount of coal that was initially being used to provide energy to industries. Clean hydroelectric power that will be produced from Three Gorges Dam will replace the dependence on coal in most of the manufacturing factories.
In conclusion, the Yangtze River has been claiming thousands of live in every rainy season. However, the Chinese government has found the solution that will not only control floods, but also produce clean energy to meet the demands of growing industries. Therefore, use of technology was the answer to building one of the biggest dams ever constructed in China along River Yangtze to prevent more loss of lives. The project displaced many people and at the same time, it improved the living standards of the people.
