The primary challenge of the two developments is safety. Any aerodynamic development must first ensure that the safety of its use if fully guaranteed. The modern drones are small such that one can easily destroy them with a catapult or a hunter’s rifle (4x4 Aviation, n.d). If one must extend the drone technology to larger ones, one must consider the security of the people on the ground since a much heavier craft has a higher risk of falling or stalling midair. Since both concepts advocate auto control, there is a need to ensure that one cannot hijack, and divert them mid-air. The two projects require a lot of money to develop them fully. The competition might also reduce the attractiveness, and hence stall the development.
What is the competitive landscape in air cargo look like?
The only challenge that these developments address is the breaking down, and repackaging of the goods in the standard containers. However, such may not necessary make the idea attractive cost-wise since the amount saved in scrapping repackaging might not reduce the overall cost of transportation. Considering that the standard air cargo might hold many containers at the same times, there is no any potential that both the 4x4 and the FanWing can transport more containers at once than the current cargo planes. The distance covered is very limited and, therefore, limits the attractiveness of the two developments over the other cargo planes. The speed as of now is quite low compared to the already existing cargo planes. However, there could be low competition if the cargo transportation requires unprepared grounds. Therefore, they can serve to remote areas at a low cost since they use less fuel, and at a low maintenance cost (FanWing, N.d).
What potential regulatory obstacles would it face?
There has never been such a high-scale unmanned object traversing the space with the enormous weights as both developments envision. Therefore, there shall be regulations on where one can use them. In addition, there shall also be regulations on the use of the established airports as unmanned planes poses higher safety risks than the manned ones.
