Speaking about Romanticism first and utmost it should be noted that it was highly affected by revolutionary movements in America and France the main idea of which was the rights of men. According to Longman: “Even literature was caught by a sense of revolution”.
Therefore, the most important things that can be distinguished from Longman’s work are the following:
A lot of writers who belonged to the Romantic era put a great emphasis on imagination and tried to define this phenomenon. Quickly changing world, new demands of the society – all these factors contributed to the fact that the authors started to imagine worlds elsewhere. In all genres whether it was novel or poem, the authors depicted other places and times full of love and adventure.
Also, it is notable that romanticists had a strong passion for exotic setting. Their main area of interest was something unfamiliar, irregular and even wild. Thus, their values are opposed to neoclassical values of balanced harmony and rational order.
However, romanticists were interested not only in the exotic worlds. Longman mentions one more landscape in the Romantic age which is known as “the psychic terrain of imagination”. At this rate the authors of this age touched on the themes of superstitions, fantasies, mysteries and supernatural power.
The writers of Romantic age were against tradition, trying to create new forms and new genres, but at the same time many of them wrote a lot about the past and expressed their own vision of it. As Longman states, “Literary tradition was cherished national heritage”. Thus, many writers admired works of their progenitors, for example Milton’s or Shakespeare’s.
A great attention in works of that time is put on the internal world of the character and the so called “I” (individual authority) is highlighted. What is more, many authors according to Longman cultivated “I” as antihero – the alienated idealist and the outcast.
Separately, what did you personally find the most compelling about the Williams reading?
As for me, the most compelling thing about Williams reading is the way the author describes poetry. It appears everywhere in our lives: in different books, songs, cards, billboards. What is more, quite often poetry echoes in our hearts with a great number of different emotions that we cannot understand. The author managed to explain how it is important to understand the tone, prosody, vocabulary of literature and other literary devices. Only this way we will be able to understand the mesmerizing world of literature.
