3. In what ways is Book 4 the story of the tragedy of Dido?
Book 4 has represented Dido as a tragic lover just like Romeo and Juliet as mentioned by Shakespeare. Dido is in love with Aeneas. From Book 4, it is evident that Aeneas also loves Dido equally. But, Aeneas leaves her in Carthage as he has to consider his business dealings and to naissance Rome. Dido is of the opinion that his love Aeneas will become capable of strengthening her city. The actions of Aeneas are, however, a result of the temporary rejection of his true responsibilities and obligations. He involves temporary in the flesh pleasure and in romance but afterwards, he adopts responsible attitude. However, love and liking is at the odds with the fate, regulations, and law. This is because the love distracts and misguides its sufferers and victims from their duties. Dido discards Carthage’s construction with Aeneas. She, however, also confesses to Aeneas that she is being hated because of her own reasons, own subjects, and own selfish acts. So, she suggested Aeneas to move on as he will not be able to focus on the founding of an empire in case he spends time with Dido. Furthermore, Dido has also shown herself as a less responsible person as compared to her partner. The emotions of Dido have corroded the strength of her mind, and self-control. She, however, explains her love as an internal fire that is eating her away. But, on the other hand she has killed herself for the love and left the city that he founded without any assistance from a leader.
In a nutshell, the character of Dido has shown love as well as less responsive attitude towards the love.
