Opinion and Explanation of the Article and Cartoon
Article Analysis:
In the following paragraphs, I am giving my opinion regarding an article that was written by Nicholas Kristof. In this article, the writer is talking impact of increasing population of deer in North America. Moreover, my opinion is also providing a judgment of one of my classmates’ similar opinion.
Is the slightly humorous tone of Kristof's essay inappropriate for a discussion of deliberately killing wild animals? Why or why not?
One of my classmates has written that the utilization of humor is not acceptable in this article as the article is concerned to killing deer. However, I have a different opinion.
The humorous tone of Kristof is appropriate because we will have to understand his motive of writing this article. His motive is completely humanitarian. He is thinking about saving human lives that are at great risk due to the presence and interference of deer in a specific area. According to him, around 150 people every year died due to accidents that cause because of deer. 2. Does Kristof make any tacit or implicit assumption* with which you disagree? With which you agree?
My classmate is right that Kristof assumed that hunting deer is the only option to control the population of deer. The other point is also correct that killing of deer may affect the natural food chain. Nonetheless, Kristof should have written about other controlling options such as putting them in conservation areas and birth control. 3.To what extent has Kristof convinced you?
Although my classmate is not convinced at all with the point of view of Kristof, yet Kristof has convinced me at some extent. His style of writing is very logical. Moreover, he has presented several statistical facts about death numbers of human. Undoubtedly, the deer have been causing great problem for the locals and travelers. However, killing everything without finding rational solution is barbarism.
Cartoon’s Explanation
The artist of this cartoon is Mike Thompson and this cartoon was published on 22 October at Creator.com.
There is a ship standstill in water and three people are standing on the dock of the ship. Two are talking with each other. One person is asking ‘where’s the birth certificate?’ The other responding ‘Obama says his new dog was born in Michigan.’ The other person is in the position to throw a box. On the box, the word ‘Tea’ is clearly visible. The cartoon is a political satire. The ‘tea’ is a symbol used to exhibit ‘Republicans.’ One person is asking ‘where’s the birth certificate?’ The other responding ‘Obama says his new dog was born in Michigan.’ A flag with the text ‘Don’t Tread on me’ is waving on a mast of the ship. At the bottom of the cartoon, another line is written ‘And so it begins’
This cartoon of Mike Thompson making its point clearly regarding political upheaval that has been caused due to the controversial issue of birth certificate of Barrack Obama, the President of the United States. On one hand, the question is funny ‘where is the birth certificate?’ on the other hand, the answer is hilarious ‘Obama says his new dog was born in Michigan’, too. Clearly, there is no relation between the question and the answer. It is just a sarcastic tone cartoonist use generally. The word ‘Tea’ and ‘So it begins’ both have link. The boxes are depicting the members of tea party movement and they are being through in the water. ‘Do not tread on me’ is another sarcastic phrase. A threatening phrase, if you tread on me I would through you away!
