I belong to a group of students who share a distinct communication style. Within the academic setting, students are expected to behave according to the policies and procedures defined under the University’s code of discipline. As such, our verbal and written communication are structured within bounds of academic honesty, integrity, and in compliance with ethical, moral, and legal standards. Students form bonds according to course programs, modules taken, group works assigned, as well as ethical or cultural orientation. Much the same way as exhibited in “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, the writer narrated experiences which stereotypes Negros as people who should be feared due to their strength and aggressive nature; students were sometimes viewed as nosy, curious, loud, and irrepressibly jacks of all trades. As such, we communicate within the peer group, at times with faculty and support, and intermittently with parents and siblings.
As students, we use verbal communication more when we need to express ourselves with others, outside of our peer group. There is a need to be aware of cultural differences to facilitate the need to transition from verbal communication to body language, when needed. Likewise, we observe the need to express ourselves in a more professional or formal manner in written discourses, as required.
In retrospect, when students bond, we share similar ways of communicating experiences like the ironworkers. The length of camaraderie defines the depth of emotional bonds established between us. My small circle of peer friends, who had been my buddies since freshmen, has been my physical, emotional, spiritual, and academic support. As such, we understand each other through non-verbal modes of communication: a glance, a smirk, a wink, or just a second of silence. The friendship that has been developed enabled enhancing the effectiveness in communication. Sometimes, we need not say the words; and yet, we understand the message being conveyed.
