Introduction
Goal-setting theory is one of the leading theories of motivation for performance improvement. As a manager of an organisation, it is important to ensure that the needs of the company and the employees are served through goal setting.
Key Strategies
Setting goals for the organization contribute to the short- and long-term business strategies. Also, it is essential that the goals are clear, objective and comprehensible for the employees, otherwise they would soon be disengaged . When the managers are allowed to access the goals of other departments, goal redundancies and conflicts throughout the organisation is reduced. Also, goal sharing is quite helpful as the departmental heads could spot out areas where they could have been inadvertently working against each other. Managers must ensure that the expected tasks are properly communicated to employees and how each task is to be completed . An effective method of motivating employees to perform at their best is setting SMART goals (Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Aggressive, Realistic, and Time Bound).
Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines has been successful in motivating its employees by providing them with a clear vision for the company and recognizing the efforts of its employees . The efforts of the company can be closely related to the goal setting theory of motivation. According to the goal setting theory of motivation, employees are attracted towards goals that are specific and clear and are set by them together with the company management . In the case of Southwest Airlines, the management set specific, moderately difficult and time bound goals for the employees and also attached rewards to these goals thus motivating the employees further to work towards these goals.
