Healthy Sleep Pattern PSA
There is a huge focus in our society on healthy eating and exercise yet there isn’t enough focus on the need for healthy sleep patterns. This is why a radio public service announcement targeted at teens is such a useful tool in the fight for our nation’s health. This demographic is among the most likely to not get the proper amount of sleep. The reason the decision was made to use radio time is the time it will be played. The PSA will play at 6:58am every week day for a month, this time period was selected due to the high volume of teens who would be in the car driving to school at that time. The marketing approach is a gain-framed message. The teens who were asked to fill out questionnaires for market research purposes were more responsive to positive, encouraging messages than fear based, threatening messages. The health literacy options are outlined in the below script for the announcement.
TEENAGE BOY VOICE: Mom, I wanted to give you a shout out. I owe you a huge “THANK YOU!” I know I complained a lot when you told me that if I didn’t turn off all my electronics at 8:00pm every night I couldn’t use the car anymore but man, was it worth it! I am sleeping so much better now that I have set up some wind down time in my schedule. I actually fall asleep at 10pm and get a full 8 hours of sleep! I feel great. I have soooooo much more energy than I did when I got, like, 5 and a half hours of sleep. I also think a lot more clearly and I don’t even have to set an alarm anymore – I wake up on my own and it is so easy to get out of bed. Your advice to change my sleeping habits so I go to bed and get up at the same time every day helped too - now my body naturally falls asleep on its own. no more tossing and turning and staring at the clock counting the hours I have until I need to get out of bed! I admit, cutting the caffeine after 3pm was difficult but I am glad I did it. I have a healthy sleep pattern now and I didn’t know I could feel this good..I don’t even fall asleep in chemistry anymore! And I am not nearly as moody as I used to beI have even lost weight. I had no idea my moods and weight gain were connected to not getting enough sleep! So, thanks mom – I’m glad you love me enough to help me do hard things that make my life better. OK.I love you too.
ANNOUNCER VOICE: Healthy sleep patterns are just as, if not more, important to a thriving life as food and exercise. Sleep better. Live better.
