A leader faces many new challenges when moving into a new organization or institution. This is largely due to the new environment to include: climate, culture, modes and practices, tradition, and standard operating procedures. These new challenges however are key in creating effective organizations through powerful leadership.
A leader faces pressure when moving in a new organization. This pressure, be it from peers, superiors, or from subordinates stems from the leader’s need to be successful. Usually a leader wants to do a good job so that he or she is respected in the new work environment. Furthermore a leader may be required to change his or her leadership style or methods of leading. This is because the new organization might have different ways of operating or people are different. Another challenge leaders take on when moving to a new organization is the urge to change things right away. It is good leadership to wait a few weeks or maybe even months before implementing changes, even if the leader believes these changes would benefit the organization. This is because employees or subordinates will be naturally resistant to change. A leader moving to a new institution faces the challenge of setting new goals or expectations for the employees. The old leader might have had different expectations for the employees. A leader needs to create his own criteria for employee success.
Lastly a leader faces challenges such as not knowing as much about the organization and its people than the employees. This is usually the case because the leader is new and does not have the same amount of time within the organization as the employees. A leader can mitigate this by asking questions and getting to know the people and the organization’s “story”.
