Kelly Link’s “The Wrong Grave” is a story that tells about a young man who happened to be a broken hearted. The story portrays how the man shows how he loved the woman who passed away by burying his only copies of his poem in her grave. With his actions, it represents an event where a person still holds the remembrance of his loved one. The ghostly theme that this story represents is the weird event when he tried to retrieve his poems from her grave. It was a strange and creepy happening that a normal person may not even attempt to do. Kelly Link created this story which is almost indeed not human as she wrote it to express an elemental theme which somehow expresses an earthly power in order to put more fascination in her tales. The writer uses the story of love to make the people interested in their reading. The writer also created a wonderful tales that will keep her going straight and excited in her work to surprise her readers.
The Heart of Another
Marcus Sedgwick’s “The Heart of Another” entails a story that shows a girl who undergone an operation on the heart. She woke up in the hospital and realized that she had already had a new heart. As the days go by, she copes with the pain of the operation and reminds her of her situation as she sees the permanent scar on her body. A few days more, her hospital memories gradually fade. The narrator of the story expressed a theme of ghostly event using a dream, which become a strange event to the unnamed girl. She discovered that her dream was about the person who passed away, who happens to be her heart doctor. A creepy event in the story was trying to communicate with her as her heart donor was brutally murdered. As she continued to search for the truth about her heart donor, an ironic yet gothic event was portrayed in the story, and that is the ironic involvement of her tutor, John, to the death of her heart donor, whom she included in her research. The highlight of the story’s theme is when John attempted to leave, but seemingly a spirit possession happened. That is when there were two arms wrapped around his neck until he dies. Additionally, the theme will let the reader think about the possibility of the heart donor’s revenant and leaving the question as to who killed him, was it the narrator of the story, was it her, or was it done by the heart of another?
The House and the Locket
Chris Wooding’s “The House and The Locket” is a mysterious and gothic story about the narrator and his friend who was stalked by a creature when he and his friend are going to the house of the girl he’s going to marry. As they are on their way an angry spirit approach them to the empty house they entered to hide. The spirit is the woman who keeps the narrator a husband, a hang man carrying his face. The narrator used a gothic event when they suddenly found a diary that was dated twelve years ahead, It was the story of a family tragedy. The story expressed a ghostly event when they found out that a woman locked in the attic her son named Henry, before she scolded her husband about the womanizing. The story is portrayed as a tragic spirit possession through their fighting the husband strike his wife and killed her suddenly by accident, without his knowledge that his son was locked upstairs, the husband through the guilt he felt for what he has done suddenly hanged himself. The tragic story is when during their escape the friend of the narrator was killed. When the narrator met his future wife he gave her a promise to be a better husband. Through what happened to them gave a lesson to him to be faithful as the writer expressed this tragic ghost story.
