The Good Lord Bird is a novel, written in 2013 by a New Yorker James McBride. This novel became a winner of a Book Award in 2013 and obtained a lot of positive reviews. The Good Lord Bird caught the fancy op the audience because of the witty tone of the plot, funny jokes and also incredible images. The novel is often getting comparison to Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. As for me, I was impressed by the first few lines of the book. To be exact, by the beginning of the first chapter, where McBride depicts Pa of the main character, a young slave Henry Shackleford. As a person, who likes reading and find this historical period very interesting, I like the way how author describes the characters. Because of McBride’s style of writing, and define, right words we see the story through the eyes of a young slave. He makes the story become alive. Thanks to that one can easily image how exactly Pa looked: a black man, who worked as a barber, wore a hat, high-collar shirts and two different-colored pairs of trousers, sewed together. Reading this part of the novel gives us the understanding of how parents of Henry were looked. The author uses witty descriptions to show what the attitude to the Pa was in the town. This novel literary carries the audience exactly to that times and makes us to live out every adventure and misadventure that happened to the characters. The Good Lord Bird can be called a richly image novel for sure. Touching such important period of American history as abolitionism, James McBride represents it lightly, including comic dialogues and witty original tone, which made the novel an American favorite one.
