Women and girls face a threat of encountering violence at some point in their lives. Violence against them is a grave mistake that goes against human rights. The violence comes with impacts that are either temporary or permanent. These women face the risk of having multiple consequences like mental, physical to even sexual ones. Death may also be a result of violence against women and girls. The violence affects the social life of such victims to an extent of even limiting their participation in society. News of violence is not a surprise in today’s world. It has become one of the most frequent articles in media avenues like newspapers.
On 23 February 2015, The New York Times had an article on the violence against women. The article focuses on a 20-year old student that was a victim of murder. Ozgecan Aslan was the last passenger on a minibus in Mersin City, Southern Turkey on 11 February 2015. The driver then took advantage of the situation by heading into the woods and tried to rape her. The driver faces accusations of allegedly beating her with an iron bar and later stabbing her after she attempted to resist the abuse. The driver went a step further to cut off her hands in a bid to wipe off any DNA traces under her fingernails. The driver allegedly burnt the body with the assistance of his father and a friend. Turkish president, the Recep Tayyip Erdogan among many other citizens, hopes that the suspects receive the heftiest penalty possible. Turkey has a culture that despises women, treating them as second- class citizens.
The article is a good example of violence against women in today’s world. It is evident that women do not get the respect that they deserve, in this case. The ordeal might not have happened if the last passenger had been a man. The chief suspects portray the highest level of bias towards women. One can tell that the defendants view women as sex objects and do not require them to defend themselves. The driver not only intended to rape the victim but also went ahead to kill her as well. All this happened because she tried to protect herself. Such inhumane acts towards women are a great concern. The suspects deserve severe punishment for their mistakes, and the culture of affected countries should learn to respect women.
Most suspects of violence against women face little or no punishment for the crimes they commit. Turkish activists and lawyers claim that the mild penalties are due to a culture that looks down upon women . Advocates also say that investigations into the death of females rarely occur. They claim that the husband may go unpunished if he claims that it was due to an accident. They also claim that police do not take such cases seriously. Volunteer activists may take up such cases, but judges end up ruling in favor of the perpetrators. The judges side with the suspect’s defense who claims that such victims were promiscuous or that the man’s life does not deserve to suffer in prison. Ipek Bozkurt, an attorney in Istanbul, claims that there is a failure in the enforcement of laws in Turkey because the judges do not care about the welfare of women.
Women and girls deserve fair treatment in society. Violence against them should be unheard of and outdated. The enactment laws supporting their rights should happen especially in countries where women do not get the respect they deserve. Suspects like the minibus driver and his accomplices deserve severe punishments to serve as an example to others. The police should avoid any form of biases and should arrest any reported suspects with immediate effect. Judges should also ensure they adhere to the law and do not side with perpetrators. These women are fellow human beings and deserve better treatment just like every other man.
