This talk is about self-confidence which can be improved by altering one’s body language. Cuddy is a social psychologist and her research shows that a person can become more powerful by faking it in the beginning. All is about practice. There are high-power poses and low-power poses and they affect the way we feel and think about ourselves, not only how the others perceive us. I learned from this that an ambitious person can become more powerful by doing simple exercises.
Cuddy explains that by assuming a high-power pose for two minutes before an important evaluation meeting, a person can become more powerful because the level of their testosterone increases and the level of cortisol decreases. This is the sign of a true leader. With time, this becomes easier and that is why Cuddy believes that people can fake it until they actually become it. She communicated her point effectively by showing examples of different people who are either meeting for the first time or greeting each other. She also presented the power poses from the animal world. The most interesting example was of the athlete who was in a winning position after winning a running competition. Cuddy also mentioned that she suffered from a decrease of her IQ due to a severe car accident, but that she overcame that with hard work. That is why her speech is so persuasive. It comes from her personal experience. I agree with the assumptions upon which she based her information because her points are strong and every person can become more assertive, optimistic and confident if they have enough will-power.
