Discipline is the key to success
The movie narrates how Ben Carson, despite being raised by a single mother, rises from last position in fifth grade to a famous neurosurgeon even though his classmates make fun of him because he is the dumbest kid in class (Dan & Carter, 2009). Ben Carson comes to realize that he was imperfectly born and his mother dismisses this and demands him to do better and get rid of F’s. He is temperamental trait is seen when he almost kills his close friend and prays to God to take away his bursts of anger. This makes a turning point in his life because he does not encounter it again. Despite scoring low grades, his mother never gives up on him. She rules that Ben and his brother should spend less time on television and read two books every week from the library and give her a written report on the same which she could not read because she dropped out of school. She demands them to read and use their talents given to them by God. In light of the above, being disciplined is the key to success.
Ben Carson diligently follows what his mother tells him. He takes an initiative by getting off the couch and goes to the library to read books to improve his grades. He startles the class when he was able to identify samples of rocks the teacher had brought to class because he had read a book in the library about rocks. He used the knowledge and he became the student with the highest achievement in eighth grade. Ben Carson has faith and commits himself to read as a show of accepting what her mother had told her: focus on his studies and ended up being a neurosurgeon.
Modern challenges for success include failure to believe in one’s potential, indiscipline and listening to negative remarks. I have once met a student who was constantly teased by her classmates because she couldn’t speak good English. She used to be laughed at whenever she mispronounced a word but despite this, she went on and read books and focused on how improve her English and eventually passed in her final exam. Despite these, she never gave up and finally realized the fruits of self-discipline. This shows how willingness and commitment to work are beneficial.
