It is no doubt that George and Lennie are good friends. We can tell this by the way they interact with each other and what they have gone through together. They have a shared dream of living on their farm and keeping rabbits that Lennie loves. George also becomes Lennie’s protector because of his low mental ability. Their friendship is strained when Lennie puts George in trouble several times. Their friendship is not always genuine because George seems only to tolerate Lenny, and the fact that he finally killed him meant that he wanted to do away with him so that he can fulfill his dreams alone. One instance where George asserts that Lennie brings him trouble is when he said to Lennie, ‘‘God, you are a lot of trouble, I could get along so easy and nice if I didn't have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl.’’ George feels that Lennie has frustrated him and their dreams by getting them run out of Weed by his accusations of attempted rape and killing Curley’s wife. The two friends offer each other comfort and companionship from their shared dreams of the journey they took together from Weed to Soledad.
It is clear that all the characters are depicted as poor, because even ‘the boss’ is also put in charge of the farm by the owners of the ranch who happen to be a big land company. Every character in this novella plays a very important role. From the black man who is isolated to the stable to the man who is considered the ‘prince of the ranch’ who is greatly respected because he is kind and has a lot of insights. Given that virtually almost all characters in this novella work on the ranch, it is clear that they are poor because most of them have a dream of leaving the ranch at some point. Candy also explained to George and Lenny that he will make a will and leave his share to them because he is so poor and has nothing not even relatives. The importance of these characters is also shown by the way they express their dream and complement each other at the farm.
George and Lenny set out to live the American Dream by owning their farm, and this will enable Lennie to keep rabbits, although he always kills them. The two friends thought that if they had their farm they would not have to be wanderers and drifters any more, they will have their own families and own a number of animals that Lennie swears each time to tend to. However, they face many obstacles in achieving this dream. One of the obstacles they face is that Lennie keeps getting mischievous by his reckless actions that always put them in trouble. They don’t work on the dream of owning their farm, and it remains just that, a dream. They are also faced with a dangerous situation by being constantly being intimidated by the menacing Curley, and that also acts as a hindrance to their dream.
George decides to kill Lennie because he thought that he was a hindrance to his dreams. He constantly retells Lennie’s story all the time, but it is clear that he doesn’t have faith in it. He feels that Lennie’s main dream is just tending to rabbits and stroking them although he always kills them. By thinking so he came to a conclusion that Lennie’s dream was just narrow and unattainable. George exclaimed to Lennie after he killed Curley’s wife that if he were alone he would live pretty easy without any problems. By getting rid of Lennie he thought that he might as well achieve his dream alone because Lennie was working against it all the time. Maybe he made a god choice to get rid of him so that he cannot get in his way again to achieving his dream of owning a small farm.
