Introduction
Over the years, many Asians students who come to study in New Zealand find it difficult to balance their life, work and study due problems related adaptation and culture shock (Meerman, 2014). According to a recent survey, a large portion of these students end up dropping out of school due to inability to live in a “hostile” environment. They take too long to adapt to the new environment especially on the social aspect.
This study will aim to establish how adaptation affects the work, study, life balance of Asian students in (NTEC College, Auckland) in New Zealand. The findings of this study will enable the college administration, local students and other stakeholders to help these Asian students to settle and live in New Zealand (Ramia, Sawir & Marginson, 2014).
Literature Review
Many international students face many challenges in their efforts to adapt to the new environment that sometime is completely different from their home environment. Problems such as inability to communicate in English, new people, unfamiliar food and clothing make it difficult for them to continue with their study smoothly (Wong-Toi, Krägeloh & Henning, 2015). The problem becomes worse if students are moving from one content to another that is completely different from their home content.
Type of Research Intervention/ Procedures
The study will employ a survey method where 40 online questionnaires will be sent to some of the Asian students studying in the NTEC College. The questionnaires will be collected and analyzed after two weeks using different statistical tools.
Participant Selection
The participants will be selected randomly using the college enrollment database. However, the researcher will ensure they are distributed to students at all levels from first year to the last year and to both gender.
Voluntary Participation
Participants will notified prior to participation that taking part in the survey is voluntary and no one will be forced to participate.
Duration
The participants will be requested to submit their filled questionnaires within a period of two weeks in order to allow for their analysis. Each questionnaire will take about 30 minutes to fill.
Risks and Benefits
The study will ask general questions and hence there is no any anticipated risk. Although the study will not have any direct benefits to the participants, it will help the college community to address the adaptation problems that Asian students are experiencing.
Confidentiality
Any information that participants will provide will be treated in a confidential way and it will only be used for this study purposes. In addition, the findings of this study will be shared with the participants before releasing to the public.
Right to Refuse or Withdraw/contact
If you don’t wish to participate in this study or even to withdraw along the way, please feel free to do so. The email of the researcher will be provided at back page of the questionnaire and you can contact him any time for any question or clarification.
Expected Results
At the end of the study, the researcher expects to come up with a list of numerous problems that that Asian students are facing in NTEC College. These problems may include inability to communicate in English, lack of friends, stereotypes, unfamiliar foods and clothing, among other challenges.
