Capstone Project Summary

Abstract
The target organization for my capstone project is Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics, a subsidiary of Samsung Corporation, is a major player in the consumer electronics, home appliances, and telecommunication equipment and semiconductor industries. The project will entail the preparation of a consultative report aimed at the improvement of the general management, time management, quality management, cost management, and risk management. The consultative report will lead to recommendations on how to address performance issues in specific areas of current research within the organization.

Introduction

The target organization for my capstone project is Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics, a subsidiary of Samsung Corporation, is a major player in the consumer electronics, home appliances, and telecommunication equipment and semiconductor industries. My capstone project will entail the preparation of a consultative report aimed at the improvement of the performance of the target organization, Samsung Electronics. Consequently, the focus areas of my research will include general management, time management, quality management, cost management, and risk management. The consultative report will make recommendations on necessary actions in order to improve performance in the specific focus areas covered.

Background of Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics was started as an export business. Since then, it has transformed into an electronic giant, one of the biggest globally. The company specializes in semiconductors, digital appliances, system integration and memory. Samsung Electronics, a subsidiary of Samsung Corporation, is a major player in the consumer electronics, home appliances, and telecommunication equipment and semiconductor industries.

Many organizations will commission different projects based on their needs. It is my belief that the assessment of this organization should be one of the most important projects that an organization undertakes. From such a project, an organization can base its strategy formulation. I choose this project in order to prepare and hone my project management skills, especially in diagnosing the bottlenecks within an organization and making strategic recommendations.

Project Outcomes

The scope of the capstone project includes numerous areas in the organization. In considering the performance issues in these areas within the organization, I will get an opportunity to apply the foundational knowledge and an understanding of business systems, processes and technology. Additionally, the scope of the project requires knowledge from core disciplines such as management, sociology and mathematics among others. The consultative report will lead to recommendations on how to address performance issues in specific areas of current research within the organization. In making these recommendations, I will consider differing perspectives in order to determine which best suits the organization considering its organizational structure and culture.

SWOT Analysis of Samsung Electronics

Strengths
The innovation and design departments at Samsung Electronics are robust and give the company a competitive advantage.
Samsung Electronics enjoys the largest market share in the mobile phone segment. The company has also recently overtaken the previous market leader in the Smartphone segment, Apple Inc.

Samsung has a robust production and engineering department that produces quality consumer electronics and hardware parts.

The company has a very strong marketing and branding system, a element that has pushed the company to the top of the industry.

Weaknesses

Samsung has been involved in protracted battles with competitors such as Apple over infringement on patented technology.
Despite the many products and high sales, the profit margins of the company are very low.
Many of the competitors of the company also double as the largest buyers of the products of the company.
The product portfolio of the company is expansive, and as such the company does not focus on one product.
Opportunities
The recent growth in the tablet market and the sustained increase in the popularity in the Galaxy line of products offer an opportunity for increased and sustained growth.

The company also has an opportunity to exploit the growth in the demand for premium and quality application processors.

The Indian market is a big opportunity especially because of the popularity of Smart phones in this market.
Through acquisitions and its research and development department, the company has increased its number of patents.
Threats
The Indian market is also a target for many other competitors. If the company reacts slowly or makes a late entry into the market, this potential market could be lost

In developed countries, the smart phone market is shared by other competitors, hence the saturation.

The continued success of the company is also threatened by the competitors in China who make low cost devices.
A failure in one of the company’s many products could dilute the brand reputation and impact other products in its portfolio negatively.

Recommendations

Samsung has been implicated in unfair labor practices. I recommend that the company reforms its human resource practices in order to incorporate fair labor practices where the employees get a full disclosure of their working conditions before they are engaged and child labor is not used (Miller & Cross, 2013).
Samsung has also been implicated in patent infringement. I recommend the company institutes an ethics and compliance committee to oversee a review of its code of conduct and corporate behavior with the view of instituting sustainable reforms (Michell, 2010).
I recommend the use of key performance indicators in order to improve the performance of key areas within the organization.

Conclusion

The capstone project will add to my analytical skills be focusing on a real organization, facing real issues and in need of real solutions. By writing this project, I apply skills and concepts learnt throughout the course.
