“The Struggle to be an All-American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong is a story of vain efforts to make people love things they do not love. This is a childhood story of the author who was born in China-town but considers herself to be “All-American”. All the efforts of her and her brother's relatives to make them become more “Chinese” totally failed.
After reading this essay I felt little bit embarrassed because I blamed a girl for repudiation of her ancestors and traditions. She and her brother became absolutely American while all their relatives possessed features that belonged to their true Motherland. I could not understand how learning language can be so tiresome and unwelcome by two young people who may now enjoy then benefit of fluent Chinese. But I have reconsidered my position. I believe that a person could not be pushed to do something without his or her willingness. The result of such doing will be poor.
Still I have some questions to the author. I think she has something more than just incapability of learning language. I mean I am sure that the problem lays far deeper than the story shows us. She easily gets irritated even after hearing the small sound and intonation of a person speaking Chinese and, no doubt, she hates and is afraid of her teacher. I think there are a lot more reasons of such her non-perception of language.
Reading this story I felt more and more pitiful to their mother. She tried to make her children remember the best features their nation possesses. She did not oppose the fact that her children are American, that they live in the American society and that they share American nation's values. Her mere desire was to show them their other side by making them learning language. Maybe she did it in a wrong way but there was nothing bad in her wish to do so.
This essay makes us see problems in the immigrants' families. It puts in contrast mother and her children who cant understand each other. Mother's mistake is that she decided her children must learn language, but she did not show them how to love this language. Children's mistake is in absolute disrespect to all features their nation possesses.
Here I would like to cite some words from this story: “The language was a source of embarrassmentIt was quick, it was loud, it was unbeautifulChinese sounded pedestrian”. I really was totally stuck reading these lines. A girl possessed such hatred even hearing sounds of Chinese. She compared it to any other language and again and again repeated that it is noisy, loud and awful. She should have shown some respect only because her mother spoke that language.
