Question 3
The Yemen’s Houthi insurgency is a rebellion that originated in Northern parts of Yemen. Specifically, the insurgency began in 2004 when the leader of Zaidi Shia sect launched an uprising against the government. In reference to this insurgency, it is clear that the regional physical environments have facilitated the spread of the movement. For instance, research indicates that the fighting is largely concentrated on the Northern parts of the country, where the country boarders other conflict prone countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. The harsh environmental conditions made the insurgents feel oppressed by the government of Yemen, especially due to lack of employment and sufficient supply of resources.
Apart from the physical environments and religious beliefs, cultural backgrounds and age have also contributed immensely towards this insurgency. For instance, when the insurgency began, Muslim communities had just started uprisings in different Islamic nations. Those religious beliefs motivated young individuals to take part in the insurgency. In addition, the economic situations of people in Northern Yemen contributed immensely to their desire to take part in this insurgency.
Question 4
The Houthis Insurgency in Yemen has turned into a terror organization, as members are now engaging in small guerrilla wars within the region. Different organizations and groups of people have been funding the insurgency in this region. For instance, the Iranian government, and other wealthy businesspersons in Yemen, have been accused of supplying the movement with various war equipment and money. The educated classes also have been contributing ideological and manpower to the insurgency. They form the organizational structure and spread the movement incitements to every corner within the region.
The insurgents, like other illegal militias, acquire their resources through illegal means. For instance, in Yemen, the movement harasses individuals supporting the government, steal from them, and take over their businesses. They also engage in illegal businesses and trades.
Question 5
The insurgency seems to be very complex. Although it originated from the Northern part of the country, it has spread into other regions, especially to neighbouring governorates, such as Amran, Al-Jawf and in the Saudi province of Jizan. However, the insurgency is only operational in the Gulf region. However, unlike other terror groups, Yemen has not spread its operations to other nations. Since its establishment, the insurgency has established a well-structured governing body, which ensures effective communication between the insurgents as well as the allocation of the resources. In addition, the insurgency has been coordinating with other individuals, governments, and institutions with which it shares similar interest. For instance, private corporations that are against certain government policies seem to be funding the movement. Additionally, the movement been coordinating with Al-Qaeda, Iran government and other groups that want Yemen’s government out of power. These groups play a very important role in insuring the existence and spread of the insurgency. For instance, they have been funding their operations and feeding them with the political ideas that keep them going.
Question 6
The insurgents seem to be very organized and unified. This supposition is widely based on the attacks they have organised against the government. Some of these attacks are so tactical and complex, and are associated with well-organized military forces. For instance, on January 20th 2015, the group acquired full control of Yemen’s presidential residence, including the palace, and forced the president to vacate. Such an achievement is a clear indication that the insurgents are organised and prepared for the worst.
