In this paper we will perform the basic tools of statistics and probability theory related to a real world problem. Assume we consider the daily financial reports of a café and would like to know who consume more cups of coffee: men or women? For this purpose, for the next 15 days we have observed the number of cups of coffee consumed by men and women. The results are given in the table below:
We want to check whether the daily number of cups of coffee consumed by men is significantly bigger than the daily number of cups of coffee consumed by women.
H0: μ1=μ2Ha: μ1>μ2
Set level of significance:
α=0.05
Use two-sample Student’s t-test (I use Minitab 16 Statistical Software):
Two-Sample T-Test and CI: Men; Women
Two-sample T for Men vs Women
N Mean StDev SE Mean
Men 15 82,20 6,00 1,5
Women 15 79,07 4,37 1,1
Difference = mu (Men) - mu (Women)
Estimate for difference: 3,13
95% lower bound for difference: -0,14
T-Test of difference = 0 (vs >): T-Value = 1,63 P-Value = 0,057 DF = 25
Since p-value of the test is 0.057 and it is bigger than alpha, we failed to reject the null hypothesis. There is no evidence to say that the daily number of cups of coffee consumed by men is significantly bigger than the daily number of cups of coffee consumed by women (at 5% level of significance).
