General Climate- Helsinki is best visited in the summer (July & August) where temperatures generally do not go above 30 deg Celsius. It is a clean and green city so tourists can swim in the Baltic or go to one of the many secluded islands in the archipelago like in the Hietanami area or see the large cannons protecting Suomelinna (1). The city is small with only 600,000 inhabitants and most major destinations can be visited in 5 days. The city also has good transport and is bike friendly. It is also safe for different kinds of travellers viz. children, women and LGBT. It is in the Schengen region and uses the Euro and is close to St. Petersburg, Tallin and Stockholm.
Architecture - There is a mix of different styles of architecture from Russian, Swedish, and National Finnish style. Russian Style buildings are observed in the Helsinki Cathedral (2) and the Uspenski Cathedral. Finns started their own movement of architecture and continued with building Art Nouveau style buildings in the Ullanlinna (3) and Katajanoka districts (4). Buildings like the Church of Silence make Helsinki colourful (5).
Shopping and Food- Scandinavian design is nurtured in Finland and several international brands like Marimekko (6) and Ivana Helsinki you can buy elaborate clothes with bright colors and great prints. To try traditional Finnish food you can go to the Old Market Hall where you can find everything from fresh picked berries, mushrooms (7) and pickled herring, smoked reindeer and Finnish salty liquorice.
Culture- Most people in Helsinki start playing music young and there are no shortage of either musicians or concert halls. You can find classic & opera at Musikkitalo (music house), contemporary rock & jazz at Tavastia and at the biggest metal festival in the world, Tuska (8). Test your singing voice out at the many karaoke bars where Helsinki has more karaoke bars per capita outside of Tokyo. Although Helsinki might not have the same amount number of statues as in Paris or Barcelona they have had some well studied artists. One famous statue is the Havis Amanda which is washed, capped and decorated on May 1st by different student organizations (9) or visit the 3 Smiths in front of Stockmann (Finnish version of Bloomingdales) (10).
