Bipolar disorder, a brain disorder, is characterized by extreme mood fluctuations and episodes of depression that not only affects the person but also the caregivers, family and friends. The raised changes in the mood mark its significance with a condition called mania or hypomania. The disorder deciphers the individual with abnormal happiness and energy, irritations, negative outlook towards life, etc. Substance use disorder and Anxiety disorder are often connected with bipolar disorder. One of the main implications of the disorder is that it has an emotional impact on the normal life of the caregivers including family members and friends.
Negative responses could occur among caregivers because of caregiver burden that involves an unpaid and unanticipated accountability of the individual with mental health problems. At times, the burden increases in intensity due to long durations of caregiving and hospitalization. Anxiety, fear, helplessness, guilt etc. include restraints that are commonly reported by caregivers. Also, caregivers, including family members like husband, father, son etc., experience a feeling of isolation, and their own activities are influenced or may sometimes be overwhelmed due to lack of support from family, friends and treatment providers. Furthermore studies have shown that caregivers always report elevated anxiety due to the fear of attempting suicide by the individual. This adds to the caregiver burden directly that hit the emotional strata of the family members resulting in intense emotional breakdown. Caregivers found themselves tired, worried, and isolated with a sense of deep and inescapable feeling of fear and helplessness, often aggravated by unpredictable behaviour of the individual with the mental illness. Abusive language, violent behaviour, fluctuated mood swings etc. include the unexpected behaviour orientations, which are threatening and heart-breaking for the caregivers.
Bipolar disorder increases vulnerability of the individuals suffering from the illness towards severe health conditions, and it also has a negative impact on the caregivers, which include close family members like father, son, husband etc. Not only is the individuals experience great physical and mental susceptibility but even the caregivers always experience emotional breakdown.
