Introduction

In the present times, one of the most prevalent controversial topics encompasses the protection of endangered species. There are many people who oppose the efforts carried out for protecting endangered species. Their argument is based on the ground that such efforts for the recovery of endangered species require too much money and also turn out to be a hurdle in attainment of individual property rights. The opponents also claim that these endeavors produce insignificant or no results for recovering endangered species. On the other hand, the advocates believe that protecting and saving endangered species from going extinct is the moral duty of human beings as extinction is irreversible. As far as my opinion is concerned, I believe that endangered species must be protected for saving and maintaining biodiversity.

Why is it Necessary to Preserve and Protect Endangered Species?

I believe that it is extremely important to save endangered species of plants and animals as biodiversity is fundamentally indispensable for the continued existence of human beings on the Earth. The loss of even a single class of plants or animals may inflict detrimental consequences for the remaining ecosystem as the entire food chain would be impacted. It is not an untold secret that human beings are excessively dependent on animals, plants, and water resources for their sustenance and nourishment. In the similar manner, human beings are reliable on the environment for the acquirement of shelter and clothing. Even the day-to-day activities cannot be completely executed without the provision of natural resources. The provision of food by animals and plants is the main reason biodiversity is essential. The extraction of medicines and drugs for the cure of various diseases is also possible because of biodiversity. Therefore, it must be realized and understood that man is not able to perform and manage all the tasks alone. It is the moral responsibility of human beings to make endeavors for the protection of biodiversity as “all organisms have value, whether or not we understand their benefits to us” (Alonso, 2001). The allowing of extinction of animal and plant species may result in catastrophic outcomes as other species would feel a domino-effect with the absence of endangered species. In addition, the toleration towards extinctions may also result in the extinction of human beings sooner or later. Therefore, I strongly oppose the idea that endangered species must not be protected. Endangered species are helpful for the maintenance of natural ecosystems and the improvement of life quality. I also believe that the preservation of threatened and extinction-susceptible species has the propensity of providing “an economic benefit through activities such as ecotourism and bird watching” (Chiras, 2001).

Conclusion

Considering the importance and indispensability of biodiversity for man’s own survival, it is highly important to recognize and understand the significance of protecting endangered species. The presence and maintenance of greater biodiversity results in improved environment as species’ development, growth, and proliferation is promoted. In contrast, greater extinction is directly responsible for the disintegration and poor development of any natural setting. Currently, the prevention of further environmental destruction is perhaps the most critical step for the avoidance of more harmful consequences for the bionetwork. The preservation of biodiversity has emerged as a worldwide problem in the recent times. Therefore, it is the high time for the developed world to put more pressure on the developing countries for the adoption of influential environmental-friendly strategies (Bagnoli & Goeschl, 2008).
