Industrial control system architecture
Introduction
Industrial control systems (ICS) provide real-time monitoring and control of critical infrastructure systems. The control system that can be implemented in electric power generation is the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), this is an industrial control computer based systems which can be used to monitor and control infrastructure based processes. Supervisory control and data acquisition systems are used to control assets dispersed in large geographical area (Boyer et al., 2010).
Electric power generation is a critical component for every economy and therefore electric utilities must meet the ever increasing demand for reliable power distribution and at the same time coping with the lack of tolerance on power outages and disruption. This system will also improve the efficiency of power generation and distribution systems hence increasing utilization, improving reliability and cutting costs.
Types of processes and devices on the network
There are several processes that take place, for instance in an event of power outage caused by unforeseen events such as storm, SCADA systems collect data that will help field workers identify quickly the exact location of the outage without waiting for customer calls. SCADA systems increase the speed of power restoration in case of an outage by helping operators isolate outage by opening automatic switches which are adjacent to quickly route power to sections not affected without visiting the site to perform the usual lengthy visual inspection. Some of the devices on the network include; routers used to connect LAN to WAN and also connecting RTUs and MTUs, Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) which converts sensor signals into digital data, human machine interface which presents the processed data to system operators and a SCADA server (Fabio, 2014).
They also help in assessing the whole system so that of there are places that will need improvement, they will be sent to the headquarters and call for improvement. Another component of the networks is the ability to understand the whole system and get the data that is needed. SCADA are becoming instrumental in the management of systems in the field. Some important processes can be remotely started with the use of SCADA.
