Enjoy exchanging video or photo-messages with friends without consuming much memory of your mobile phone! This is what Snapchat is. Snapchat is a mobile app which comes with self destructive feature where sender can decide the life of messages from 1 to 10 seconds. (Larry Magid, 2013). Snapchat is developed and introduced by a group of around 20 students of Stanford University in the year 2011 (Elyse Betters, 2015).
Snapchat is a unique social media app, unlike the most popular one ie Facebook and Twitter, where one can share the photos and videos with a person or group of person or simply add it to their story. Here, whatever photo or video is sent to others is not seen by others but only to the person to whom this has been sent .Doodle or caption can also be added with the video or photo. And the most importantly once the recipients receive messages, it will automatically delete within 1 to 10 seconds as per decided by the sender. Users can also privately send messages to their friends. Because of this feature, Snapchat is becoming more famous day by day as it encourages privacy of the people and the user would more freely exchange snap or videos. People also call Snapchat as anti-facebook since here a person could be candid and frank in opposite to facebook where all uploads are viewed by all the friends. An individual has a different relation with every individuals, it is possible that he is more open to one individual and reserve with the other. This is the basis of any relation. Snapchat encourages this and gives you more possibility to grow your friendship with someone special in your life in the way you like.
Since every coin has two sides, Snapchat also has both pros and cons. Let’s discuss the positive side first. First is user-friendly. Although Snapchat is an old app but is still famous for the quick and easy in navigation (Jane Wells, 2014). Second is unique concept. Snapchat comes with a unique concept of temporary messages sending. This is the first and foremost concept that has been used in any of the social media networks till date. Within ten seconds, videos or photos get not only deleted from the recipients’ window but also from Snapchat server. Third, it makes the picture perfect. Snapchat enables one to edit and colour their photo the way they like to make it perfect to be send to their friend. Fourth is less formal. Snapchat is very much informal, especially in comparison to the other social media sites since one can enjoy one to one sharing of messages. Now the other side of the coin. First is sexting. One of the main negative of the Snapchat is regardless of the concept of the founder that this app is launched to connect communities, still people has used it more for sexting. Second, it doesn’t last long. Whatever messages is received from the sender disappears in seconds, sometimes that particular video or photo is to be cherished for the lifetime or there may be some joke or something like which one want to see in a different mood. But such things are not possible in Snapchat. Third is no proof. Sometimes a person secretly takes pictures of the other person without his/her consent. And sends it through Snapchat. However, the other person whose picture has been taken would not have any proof since it will automatically get deleted to both the recipient and server of Snapchat. Fourth, Screenshot of the images can be taken. Although, Snapchat comes with facility of auto deletion still there is a drawback that the screenshot of the images can be taken or the images can be clicked through the other device .May be the sender doesn’t want the other person to save the photo or send it to someone else, but still it can be done. However, Snapchat sends the notification to the user if the screenshot of the images has been taken.
On one hand Snapchat, a temporary exchange media of videos or photos, is considered as a fantastic app where one can share whatever they want with their friends and could be spontaneous in sharing it since it comes with auto deletion facility within seconds. On the other hand it is also to be noted that there are chances that the other person is smarter and can click the picture of the photo that has been sent. So, a person should be more cautious on what he is sending and to whom he is sending. Snapchat is very convenient to use and considered as an app for 21st century. Snapchat is more like face to face communication where one can share their moments with their near ones at any moment.
