The article entitled “97% Northwest Alaska bird, mammal species could experience habitat change from warming climate” aimed to inform the reader about the possible effects of global warming to the habitat of mammals and birds. The main example utilized in the article was the species of birds and mammals that inhabit the arctic and subarctic region of northwest Alaska. The effects of global warming in our ecosystem was supported by the findings of a study of Marcot et al (2015) who researched on the possible changes in land cover, vegetation, and wildlife-habitat relationship through the use of three different approaches. Since the article is backed up by scientific evidences, it can be said that it is valid and reliable with respect to the references used in its production.
Since the article is a news article, it was obvious that the author opted to only provide the most relevant information to the topic to prevent the wordiness of the column. The straight forward way of writing an informative article was clearly seen. Also, the relevance of this news article is very timely because of the current environmental issues that the nation is facing.
One of the strengths of the article is its thorough discussion of the specific changes that might happen to different habitats if the warming climate continue to worsen. Another strength is the inclusion of quotations from the researchers themselves which made the news a lot more personal and kind of appealing to the readers. Since the article aims to inform its reader, the elements that were included in the article greatly helped in accomplishing the article’s main purpose.
On the other hand, despite considering the paper as well-written and loaded with information, the article could have been improved further if the author did not dwell so much on the statistics and numerical data provided by the references. This is to address the fact that the numerous numbers and percentages used in the article may not be understandable to other people especially to people who do not have any background on statistics or basic mathematics. In addition, the article should have added more resources from different studies for there to be visible validation and comparison among different studies. Comparison between other studies is encouraged to be able to ensure that the projected changes provided in the article are true and valid.
In totality, the article accomplished its main purpose because I was personally informed and updated about the current issues involving the environment. Despite the knowledge that I have of global warming and its causes, my knowledge is not yet broad enough to know all of the possible consequences of this phenomenon. Overall, I think that the article is well-written, valid, and a reliable resources especially when dealing with the possible effects of global warming in the habitat of different animals. The article was also published at the right time because the people must start to acknowledge the consequence of their actions and advocate possible interventions and activities that will help prevent the worsening of the current environmental issues. Thus, I encourage other researchers and students to participate in the different advocacies and activities that aim to inform other people about the consequences and irreversible effects of global warming.
