‘The Man in the Arena’ is a famous book that discusses various significant aspects ofTheodore Roosevelt’s life who was the 26th president of United States. The book is authored by Mr. Roosevelt himself and provides crucial information about different roles that he played in the contemporary American society. I chose to read this book because I was much excited to learn about life of a man who overcame several odds of his life and lead the United States of America. Theodore Roosevelt is not only known as a politician, but also as a great lieutenant, an adventurist, a historian, a visionary policy maker and a kind hearted man who loved animals and was an passionate environmentalist. I also read the book with a curiosity to explore how he managed to lead the United States and became one of the successful presidents.
Theodore Roosevelt was born in an influential family in October 1858. His father Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and mother Martha Stewart. Roosevelt Jr. used to suffer due to his poor health and there were various occasions when his condition became critical. Roosevelt Jr. was a talented child who was interested in studying nature and animals. He was educated at his home and did not go to school due to his poor health. As a bright student, Roosevelt Jr. completed his studies from prestigious educational institutions like Harvard and Columbia law school. He was very much influenced by his father who used to be active in social and political activities of New York (Roosevelt).
Roosevelt after death of McKinley tried to keep cabinet of McKinley and his policies. Roosevelt won the election and became president in November 1904. Roosevelt defeated Alton B. Parker with substantial votes. Roosevelt after becoming president took some great decisions that impacted politics and contributed towards welfare of society. Roosevelt decided to reduce power of big companies and spoke in favor of systematic organized labor. Antitrust law suits brought against companies resulted in division of some big companies. Roosevelt also intervenes when coal miners decided to go on strike and created a major threat to supply of energy. Roosevelt deployed his efforts and succeeded in stopping strike, increasing labor’s pay and reducing coal prices (Theodore-roosevelt).
Roosevelt policies were focused on workers and capitalists. Roosevelt focused on reducing corruption and supervising mega projects such as railway, which resulted in formation of Hepburn bill. Roosevelt passed Meat Inspection Act (1906) and Pure Food and Drug Act; these acts helped in providing good pure food to the people. Roosevelt also appointed as president of “American School Hygiene Association” in year 1907. Gentlemen’s agreement of 1907 increased racial tension between US and Japan, however, matter was resolved (Roosevelt, The Man in the Arena: Selected Writings of Theodore Roosevelt).
After reading the book, I came to know a lot of things about Theodore Roosevelt and various aspects of his life. He was a man of integrity, determination and his words. He proved himself in different roles and did his best in all of the roles that he played. He was very sick and his childhood was different from other children, but this negative aspect could not overtake his life. Roosevelt did not only excelled in education, but he did great in various areas including wars, adventure, environment, academics and politics. I liked and enjoyed the book very much and I would certainly recommend this book to my friends and others.
