The setting of the story takes place in Alabama, in a small town Summit. It is a story about two swindlers who desperately needed two thousand dollars in order to open their own business. That is how they arrived at idea of kidnapping. Therefore, their victim became a child of a prominent citizen Ebenezer Dorset. So, the author and his friend have chosen a little mountain two miles from Summit where they took the boy. They asked fifteen hundred dollars for him but to their surprise, despite being kidnapped it seems that the boy felt extremely happy. He called himself Red Chief, was really aggressive, played violent games and didn’t want to go home. Soon afterwards they received a reply that they could get only 250 dollars for a boy and no one wanted him to be back. Thus, both men understood that they had made a great mistake when they kidnapped the boy, who brought them more troubles than money and their plan failed.
"More Alarms at Night" by James Thurber
In this story the action takes place when the narrator recalls the time when he lived with his family in Columbus, Ohio. Thus, the narrator of the story depicts one scene from his childhood when his brother Roy threatened their father. Everything happened at night when Roy had a fever. It was a mild fever and he felt quote well however, as he couldn’t fall on sleep, he decided to have fun and play trick on his father. Therefore, he awoke his father with the following phrase: "Buck, your time has come!" in spite of the fact that his father’s name was Charles. The father was so shocked by his son’s behavior, that he thought that his son had delirium. Since then, each time the man was awoken at night by his sons with some strange questions, he was sure that they had delirium. The narrator calls this incident "threatened to get Buck".
"Across the Street and into the Grill" by E. B. White
"Across the Street and into the Grill" is a story about Assistant Treasurer Mr. Perley who invited a young receptionist from his office. On this day he felt ill and thought that he had last meal in his life that is why he told the girl about his feelings and took her to Schrafft’s. Thus, they drank Alexanders, talked about Mr. Perley’s job experience and had fun. The man didn’t feel any pain at all. But as soon as they left the restaurant and moved toward Forty-fifth Street where they met with the receptionist girl, Mr. Perley’s mood had changed. He thought that he commuted good but once he realized he had to go to Scarsdale he felt immediate pain.
"The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" by Hunter S. Thompson
The setting of the story is Kentucky where Derby takes place every year. The narrator introduced himself as a photographer of the derby as he was sure that there would be some kind of riot. Therefore, the narrator was not an ordinary reporter as he didn’t pay any attention to what was happening on the track. He was far more interested in people who visited such event which he called “the real beasts perform”. He was sure that he would meet a lot of of raving, stumbling drunks, who get angrier each time they lose their money. And the main character of the story was right: the derby turned into a disaster. No one was interested in the race itself as people were only watching their winning numbers and nothing else. But the worst is the way people behaved after the race. Thus, there were robberies, fights and violent behavior. It is also interesting that the narrator was supposed to depict the derby, but he managed to show all the chaos that was created by people during it.
