Informative Speech: On Becoming a Nutritionist
The Allied Health and Science has a list of numerous specializations in the field of health and wellness. However, while many are venturing into the field of nursing and similar tracks, one interesting major is relating to nutrition and dietetics. The reason why this field is interesting, let alone very important is because of the fact that everyone eats. Nobody is exempted from this activity—I mean eating, because it is needed for survival and sustenance. Of course, because of the austerity of eating everyone might assume that there is no need to know more about it. For many it is a logic, eating makes you healthy, energized, and well and everything positive in between not realizing that this isn’t exactly true at all times. Eating requires a special attention and should be given more thought instead of plainly devouring food. This is why the role of dieticians and nutritionists are very crucial. There allied health professionals are responsible in assisting people in choosing the right food to consume in the appropriate quantity. In this short presentation, allow me to enumerate the important role that dieticians and nutritionists perform to ensure the health and wellness of individuals. In addition, allow me to relate how this is a promising profession and why I encourage anyone considering a career in the Allied Health and Science to choose Nutrition and Dietetics.
Dieticians and nutritionists are credible authorities when it comes to food and nutrition. They are basically responsible in helping people plan their diet. Specifically, nutritionists and dieticians help individuals select what type and kind of food is best suited for their lifestyle, their age and their medical condition . In addition to helping individuals select the type and kind of food, dieticians and nutritionist also inform people of the proper appropriation of food that they can eat. Not everyone can eat the same quantity of a particular food because of some medical restrictions. Likewise, there are also people who are not allowed to eat certain kinds of food because it may be detrimental to their health, or the most, it could be fatal. For example, people who are lactose-intolerant cannot eat food with lactose. However, some think that this condition is only limited to being unable to digest or drink milk. Dieticians and nutritionists help identifies other food that has lactose in it which they may not be aware of because it is not an obvious component of the food. Hence, individuals who are lactose intolerant cannot also consume dairy products like butter and cheese. To some extent, these people cannot also take ice creams and yogurts.
After establishing the important role that dieticians and nutritionists play in the lives of people, allow me to explain why it is a promising career. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the United States Department of Labor, dietetics and nutrition is one of the most promising careers. In fact, in 2012 there were 67, 400 jobs available for people who qualify to work under this profession . It is still believed to grow by 21% beginning in 2012 to 2022. Financial wise, this profession also offers a very competitive remuneration package with a starting wage beginning at $26.56 per hour or $55, 240 annual salary. Qualified dieticians and nutritionists also have the option to choose the environment where they want to practice. Dieticians and nutritionists have various environmental settings to choose from beginning with hospitals, to nursing homes, to cafeterias, and clinics. Nevertheless, with additional credentials dieticians and nutritionists can also venture into teaching, writing books, developing supplements and even programs designed to help individuals with their diets.
However, naturally considering the level of expertise that is required from the profession, not to mention the complexities of the dieticians and nutritionists’ job description credentials and certifications are necessary. The least that the profession requires is a bachelor’s degree majoring in dietetics or nutrition. However, this requirement may vary for applicants who graduated from a foreign university. In such cases, evaluation of the credentials may be necessary. In case of failure to satisfy the needed units, a foreign applicant may need to comply and satisfy the missing units and credentials. On top of the bachelor’s degree, internship and residency may also be required. The number of hours completed may vary from states, hospitals or the regulating board. Finally, to be able to practice some states and territory often requires certification or licensure. That means that a graduate of dietetics and nutrition may be required to take an examination and pass it to assume qualification to work.
Overall, I encourage individuals who have interest in health to consider taking Dietetics and Nutrition. It is a promising career because of the financial stability that it offers. However, aside from the financial gain, an individual who graduates with this degree has a rewarding career because of the opportunity to help others better their condition.
