During my educational formation time and my years of study, I have been not once, but many times part of a team. Be them formal or informal groups, in each of the cases can be clearly delimitated the stages of forming, storming, norming and performing. The example from my experience that I have chosen to present is that of being part of a team/ group for a study project. Given a specific task, the professor has nominated a certain number of students to perform a task, involving us in a formal group task project.
The first stage after establishing the nature of the group is called the forming stage. During this stage, the team members learned the challenges and the opportunities which our team was facing. Next, we have agreed on the objectives, sharing the duties among ourselves, often working independently. The ground rules have been established and the guidelines as well. The team leader we picked can be a group member, a supervisor, a manager or a consultant facilitating the process of teambuilding, while giving directives and understanding the demands of the team in order to move to the next stage.
The storming stage appears when the individual expression of ideas, as well as the conflicts arises. Members of the team begin to focus on details instead of being attentive to problems and compete for influence. An important indicator of this stage is the lack of trust between colleagues.
Last, but not least, the performing stage in case of our temporary task team, represented the stage of completion of our work efficiently as a group. It is the stage that recognized and celebrated the merits of our team’s performance, when the expected results from this experience have been successfully reached.
