Introduction
My name is A. I am attending a university that is about to prohibit the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products within the campus’ premises, either owned or leased. But how will this policy really affect the students’ choices? How can it be implemented so effectively that the entire school community will be assured that no one smokes after the policy has been rendered executory?
Thesis statement: Prohibitive policies on smoking may find potential backlash and opposition to students arguing that it can be going against their individual rights for choice and preference.
Main Points:
The policy prohibits not just cigarettes but all other tobacco products such as pipes, dipping/snuff, smokeless cigarettes or even chewing tobacco.
The policy will be effective throughout the entire premise of the university, either owned or leased.
Positive side: (1) It protects students from developing lung cancers and other respiratory illnesses; (2) protect non-tobacco smokers from inhaling smoke belches and avoid developing respiratory illnesses; and protect the environment (Calfas et al. 3).
Policy supports the fact that there is no safe level of smoking.
Policy may also spur challenges from smoking students arguing that jeopardizes their freedom of choice owing to the belief that school policies should not disallow the use of tobacco products completely.
Schools can put up designated areas for smoking.
In order to level things up, not favouring one over the other or being too autocratic, the school can establish areas within the campus wherein students using tobacco products can smoke without causing danger to non-smoking students.

Results
The university cannot really eliminate the use of tobacco on campus.
At the same time, they cannot tolerate the use of tobacco on campus.
It is dangerous for students and employees.
Solutions
Designate smoking areas
Smoking common rooms
These are probably the most effective solution as they both respect the rights to choices of students and employees, at the same time, it fulfils the objective of the policies, which is, to clean the air, provide safe atmosphere for students and employees, and prevents diseases.
Conclusion:
Tobacco smoking is really dangerous not just to the health of the smokers but also to the second-hand smokers. The smoke that is being belched by smokers, if inhaled by second-hand smokers can potentially cause respiratory illnesses like lung cancer (IARC 9). While it is valid to prohibit smoking, it can also spur widespread opposition from students because it can go against their rights. Thus, the best solution is to serve both parties by providing designated rooms and smoking areas for smokers.
Poll Questions:

How do you think about putting up designated smoking areas? Does it affect your smoking preference in any way?
