Health Issue In South Philadelphia, PA Research Papers Examples

What we looked for

Many health issues affect South Philadelphia. These issues have affected many people, which have brought many negative issues in the town. For instance, a lot of money is spent treating these patients. A lot of labor is also wasted because sick people cannot work. This means that the town is highly affected. During our research, we sort to find the disease, which affected many people and why it was very widespread. This was a difficult task but since someone has to save South Philadelphia, we had to do it. We visited various health centers where we would get all the information we needed. There are many killer diseases like diabetes, cancer, HIV and heart diseases. From our research, we were looking for the disease, which affected many people and were having difficulties in curing it. We also were looking for the disease, which had a bad impact on the health of people and that whose causes could be minimized. This disease was heart disease. We found out that once a person was diagnosed with any heart disease, their level of working would be lowered. It was also found out that this disease was as a result of poor eating habits, and residents would spend a lot of money treating the disease (CDC 1).

Why we are doing this

We did this for the sake of our city. I was important to have a healthy city where people would be working and using their money on more valuable things than spending in hospitals. We found out that there were people who also could not afford the medication and would succumb to the disease. This was something that the city administration was looking forward to eliminating or slowing down. We also wanted to look for a solution to this problem. We wanted to reduce the amount of suffering in the people and save them a lot of money. This way, the city too would benefit from this initiative. It was also important for u to know the major heath issues in South Philadelphia. Other cities were doing this so that they could look for a solution, so we also wanted to follow their examples and serve our city. It is also good to offer solutions to our people. There are those people who know their problem but do not know how to solve them. During this initiative, we would give solutions to the problem so that it can reduce. For those who were not affected by heart diseases, it is good to offer preventive measures. This way, they would not be affected by the disease.

We are offering recommendations

After the entire research is done, our group will give recommendations. This will be offered as advice to the people of South Philadelphia. We will create awareness of the diseases on the causes, effect and solutions. Although some of heart diseases are not curable, or they are expensive to cure, we will give the people a solution, which is healthy eating. This will help them face the disease and for those who are not yet affected, they will try their best to prevent it. Heart diseases are not found in South Philadelphia. They are found in all states in America and the world at large. This means that it is upon the people themselves to ensure that they do their best to solve this type of problem.

Why Subway

This is one of the transportation areas, which are highly populated. So many people come to the subway every day to catch a favorable means of transport. This is the area that according to our team would have most people. This means that many people in the region would receive our information. Our major initiative would be open three restaurants in different locations in the subway. Many people would have cases to the restaurant. We would ensure that all the food served in these areas would be healthy. The food will contain all major nutrients and would do way with high-calorie food, which is a main cause of heart disease. We would also create awareness in this area while people are waiting to catch a train; we would try to explain to them in small groups the causes of heart disease in the area. We would also give brochures. Most people in South Philadelphia will be able to read our content. This will mean that more than 60% of the population of South Philadelphia will be aware of the disease and will try everything possible to avoid it (Children Hospital of Philadelphia 1).

Food

During our awareness campaign, diet will be our major concern, from the ingredients to the nutritional facts about them. People in South Philadelphia like processed foods that are high in calories. This is not a good eating habit. We would advise people to try fresh foods that are well-prepared. This will be the type of food offered in the three restaurants. In every meal, we will ensure that there are vitamins, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. All foods will not be processed and will be high I fiber and natural nutrients. This is a fact people have tried to ignore for a long period. This is why they are facing heavy consequences like suffering from heart diseases and another killer disease (DeSilva 124). A good diet will prevent people from suffering from such diseases.

Statistics

Obesity is one of the major causes of heart disease. This is why our target for this campaign will be obesity in order to reduce heart diseases. In 2010, 6603% of adults and 40.7% of children were obese. This means over half of the population of South Philadelphia are faced with the risk of having a heart disease, this is an alarming rate and something g should be done soon before all this people suffer from heart disease. Out of all the counties in America, South Philadelphia has a prevalence of hypertension rated at 34.5%, heart disease at 4.7%, obesity at 29.3% and diabetes at 10.7% (Safe Routes Philly 1). We also found out that over 24,000 people have succumbed to heart diseases and insufficient activity

Why South Philadelphia

Most of our group members come from South Philadelphia. We have seen and read about the many cases of people suffering from heart disease. From the given statistics, it is clear that this sis town that requires a lot of awareness. If almost half of the population is at risk in South Philadelphia, it means that something should be done immediately. We would want to reduce the number of deaths and sick people in the area. We were also doing this for the sake of our state and nation at large. A lot of money is spent for medication of half of the population. This money could be used for other activities, which would benefit the community (Safe Routes Philly 1).
