Community
When we talk of the elderly, this refers to those people who are 65 years and more. Recent studies have shown that, as one gets old, his/her cells respond slowly to hormones. Among the essential hormones that the elderly do not respond well to, is the insulin. In cases where the body cannot respond to insulin diabetes two is the result. The elderly population is therefore more susceptible to diabetes than any other age group. This health promotion paper seeks to explore the cultural issues that might affect diabetes 2 among the elderly. The paper will also look at the theory to diabetes 2 as well as the community public health organizations that will be involved in the planning and implementation of this intervention. I will also show how I will be applying my theory-based behavior change strategy to improve the social determinants of diabetes 2 among the elderly.
Culture has a direct relationship with diabetes among the elderly. In as much insulin resistant is the main cause of diabetes 2 among the elderly, culture also play a very vital role. Different people with different cultures have different types of food. Simple sugar foods are known to cause weight gain, which in return results to overweight or obesity. People who are overweight or obese are more susceptible to diabetes 2 than those who are not. This means that, the elderly people who are also overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from diabetes two than those who have a normal body mass index. The second way in which culture contributes to diabetes 2 among the eldery population, is through the level of physical activity. Different cultures have different roles for men and women. In some cultures, men are more active then the women while in other it’s the vice versa. Physical activity not only helps in maintaining a health lifestyle, but also improves the ability of body cells to respond to insulin. Therefore, in cultures where women or men have a high physical activity level, the prevalence of diabetes 2 is very low.
