Nursing

1 In the case of my friend’s grand-mother; Susan, who is seventy-nine years old, she has a frail body and requires physical support to walk around the house. However, she can perform all other ADLs on her own. She does require someone to help her take medicines. 2. Since my friend’s mother and father are employed, they have little time to spend with Susan during the day, and my friend and his sister spend as much time as possible with her. They also have a parrot at home, and Susan has a particular liking for this bird that she seems oblivious to her predicament when left with the bird. So, she doesn’t feel lonely.
3. As my friend’s parents both work, there is no financial difficulty. They are able to take care of Susan’s medical bills and insurance entitlements. 4. They live in a middle-income neighborhood, and so, have a number of close friends as neighbours. While Susan can’t go outside on her own, there is no cause for concerns regarding her safety if she were to go outside. However, there is a need for a domestic help, as Susan does remain alone during the day.
5. Transportation is not a problem, as my both my friend’s parents have their own cars. In addition to this, there is a public transport system that runs close to their neighborhood, and so, shopping centers and medical providers are easily accessible.6. Susan rarely goes to church, and so, there is no problem in visiting church on Sundays. She prays at home, and is quite independent in her personal life. There is not much more left for Susan in terms of self actualization, but she does make it a point to talk to her friends over phone whenever she feels like.
7. Since all the members at my friend’s house are old enough to take care of things on their own, their house is well-maintained. My friend and his sis take turns to clean up the house during weekends, and his parents do add to the help on Sundays. The house is safe.
8. My friend’s father has already started enquiring for a nurse to care for his mother, and this is because, he doesn’t want to take any chance at this stage of her life. He feels that Susan will require someone around all the time, and since they are able to manage their time now, it may get more and more difficult with time.
