Throughout history, there has been a fascination regarding the history of the Jews. I have always marveled the miracle of the perpetual existence of the Jewish race and people. Many have also questioned their continual existence of this group of people despite their ridicule and persecution. Through this class and my personal studies, I have understood the history of the Jews and Judaism better. Studying religious history reveals the true meaning of Judaism and Jews. In this essay, I discuss various aspects of the Judaism religion and elucidate what it means to be a Jew.
There is a lot of plasticity about particular aspects of Judaism, and many disagree on the specifics. Many who consider themselves Jewish do not believe in Judaism. Over half of all the Jewish people living in Israel consider themselves “secular.” In the United States, over half of the Jews do not have any affiliation to any synagogue. They may believe and practice some of the Judaism rituals. They may also observe some of their holidays, but they do not regard these activities and actions as religious activities (PBS 1). Traditional and liberal Jews would agree that secular people still have a Jewish identity, regardless of their state of belief.
I have learned the core principle of Judaism is that God, the creator of the heavens as well as the earth, made a unique agreement known as berit with Abraham, from whom the Jewish people emanated. According to the covenant, the Jews would receive blessings from God and His protection would prevail so long as they obeyed Him faithfully. In Judaism, Jews believe that they are the chosen servants of God called to serve throughout humanity (Brenner 120). This course and additional reading have enlightened me greatly on Judaism.
