Food price hike of 2008 presented an open business opportunity to farmers across Africa. As a result, the global elites developed an interest to exploit the opportunity in order to quench their thirst for money resource. Therefore, these elites went a mile further to acquire large portions of lands from the local people who were poor. This issue led to increased competition for land among the elites. This developed intensive land grabbing from the local farmers in Africa.
The global land rush of 21st century is not different from the colonial land acquisitions. This is because private merchants and global elites own large plantations of land just as colonies did during that period. The national laws do not favour the claims by the rural people following the land lose to the elites. This makes the issue look like the old times of colonialism when laws favoured the colonists.
The expectations of the local farmers are to have laws that will help them have rights to their land. However, as time passes by the situation continues to worsen as the elites take the advantage of the law to oppress the local farmers by acquiring their land hence frustrating them. As a result, the local farmers will remain frustrated.
In conclusion, the global land rush is remains an oppression to the poor by the global elites. Many elites use the opportunity to quench their money desires through acquiring big lands for agricultural purposes something that exerts a lot of pressure available land. Local farmers lost their land to the elites something that frustrated them very much. This problem persists today with many elites owning large portions of land.
