Abstract

All the nations of the world are becoming more globally interdependent. Therefore, it is essential that life in a foreign culture and communication be known. Culture is an end result of an initiative with a copyright sense owned by every nation. Culture of two countries is mutually different, although there are similarities of family and race. The cross cultural communication is studied for how it affects an international business manager’s role.

Matthews (2012) found that with the development of nations across world occurring in a more complex and interdependent manner, there is bound to be more global communications with greater correspondence. The problems of cross cultural communications occur when either side to trade takes a position called ethnocentrism. It is believed that one's own cultural group is somehow innately superior to others. While the fact that culture is a dominating force to cross cultural communications, it affects the process of developing progress through seven different facets called acronym ‘LESCANT’.

With the use of example of dialogue between Japanese and Norwegian trading partners the cross cultural communication problem can be identified. This example is a language issue which leads to a problem, here the Japanese person intends to say that he is uninterested in particular sale, so he says ‘ That will be difficult’. A Norwegian person understands this to mean there are unresolved problems and that the deal is not ending at the moment. He would respond by asking how to get over these problems. The Japanese person thinking the response is for no sale, is clearly taken aback. This miscommunication reiterates Norwegian perspective that statement is unclear while Japanese can view as poor perception skills. Though there are language barriers, there are many other considerations which can make impactful the communication gap. Thus an international business manager has to tide over the conflict, miscommunication, the time spent and other hurdles due to cultural miscommunication. Difficulties in language indicate gross national problems, conveying subtler distinctions and cultural variations. Difficulties of cultural bias from natural and technological environment can hamper cross cultural communication. Sources of mis-communication from climate, topography, population and natural resource availability are significant while technology and social organization are also important. Lately the problem is also studied in the context of communication and understanding of authority in a nation explained by Geert Hofstede as ‘power distance’. Ingram (2015) found that body language and sense of time can be as determining of cross cultural communication problems as other factors. In conclusion, with highly global world economy, ignorance to cross cultural communication based on ideas believed to be universal can escalate to conflicts, which leads to need for the single business environment for smooth functioning.
