The objective of this paper is to discuss and review an article published in the Wall Street Journal in January 3, 2015 about the United States government’s plan to initiate retaliatory actions following confirmations of their investigations that the perpetrators of the infamous cyber security hack attack against Sony Corporation particularly targeting its assets, records, and networks that are based in the United States .
For a brief background about the attack, Sony Corporation’s entertainment branch was scheduled to release an action and adventure movie featuring some of the highest paid comedy actors from Hollywood. While Sony Corporation said that it was merely exercising its rights to release a motion picture film that it thinks would only be profitable for the company and at the same time be enjoyed by its watchers. The alleged movie was entitled The Interview. The problem with this movie was that it uses the name and alleged personality of the North Korean government’s president Kim Jong Un, and in a satiric manner. Un, in the movie, was of course portrayed by an actor. However, the character’s actions in the film was satiric enough that the North Korean government blasted the movie’s release and even stated (although they did not directly issue threats) that if ever Sony Corporation or any part of the team that perpetrated the release of The Interview would be targeted by an incident of cyber-attack, then Sony Corporation only got what it deserved for its actions.
A few weeks before the official release of the film, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s websites and servers got hacked, including the personal and other confidential information of the roster of its staff. Everything leaked into the internet. Private email conversations between company executives and other key influential people were not exempted from the series of leakages.
The United States government later on conducted their own investigations and they later on found that the perpetrators of one of the boldest and biggest cyber-crimes in history were indeed from North Korea. This case may also be considered as one of the biggest testimonies of the United States law enforcement agencies’ proficiency when it comes to computer forensics because they were able to accurately pinpoint the origin of the attacks sooner rather than later.
After the investigation, the United States is now planning to initiate a retaliatory move against the perpetrators of the attack from North Korea in order to stop any other entity planning to stage a similar attack from doing it at any time in the future.
