It is true that learning a second language is not an easy process, especially for adults. As it was mentioned above, the process of learning requires a lot different aspects, such as memorization of new words and grammatical structures, usage of mnemonics, training ones memory, a lot of practice. But at the same time it should be noted that when one starts learning a new language her or she learns not only the language itself but much more.
As for me, learning a second language has greatly affected other aspects of my learning experience. First of all, while studying the English language I have learnt a lot about British culture. Thus, in order to improve my language skills I read a lot of English texts. Many of them were dedicated to British culture. Therefore, learning English helped me to understand deeper the way of life of British people, their traditions and assumptions, their eating habits and much more. I started to compare British culture with other cultures around the world and learned a lot of fascinating things I hadn’t known before.
Second, while learning a new language I felt an increased interest in English literature. Learning stylistics of the English language I finally started to understand prose that is: the choice of words, different stylistic devices and other clues made by the authors. On the whole, I should say that reading of literary works of great authors in the original cannot be compared with their translated versions. In fact, when you read some prose or poetry in the original you are capable of reading between the lines.
And last but not the least, speaking about my learning experience of a new language, I should say that it greatly helped me to understand the specificity of my own language. Thus, learning other language involves a lot of comparison with your own. You start to analyze how the words sound in the two languages; compare different grammatical rules and structures. I believe that all this activities may help you not only to learn a new language but also to understand your mother-tongue language much better.
