Managerial roles
Mintzberg have identified 10 different roles that are performed by managers, which include “Figurehead, Leader, Liaison, Monitor, Disseminator, Spokesperson, Entrepreneur, Disturbance Handler, Resource Allocator and Negotiator” (Ramezani et al, 2011, p. 560). Among the roles listed above, the first three belongs to interpersonal group, next three roles belong to informational group and the remaining four belongs to decisional group.
Interpersonal category generally includes all tasks involved or associated with people.
Figurehead – Manager is authorized to perform various formal procedures or observances. For e.g. cutting the ribbon for inauguration, signing the check, etc.
Leader – Manager needs to interact and communicate properly with the employees. Interactions are important for motivating and guiding the employees in the desired directions. E.g. training, team building, group meetings, etc (Burgaz, 1997).
Informational group mainly includes roles that involve categorization and processing of the collected data or information.
Monitor – Look for and collect information related to any fields in which the company operates or are interested in. Always checks the progress made by the employees or conduct employee assessments. E.g. collect and read reports, research outcome, attend or conduct trainings.
Spokesperson – Passing on information about the company and associated matters to outsiders or other parties. E.g. providing updates on the company functioning, reports, attending meetings and conferences, etc (Burgaz, 1997).
Decisional group consist of roles that involve utilizing relevant information or data for taking sound decisions.
Entrepreneur – Always focuses on identifying innovative ideas and opportunities for bettering the organization. E.g. initiating novel and innovative projects, strategising options for future.
Disturbance Handler – Mainly involved in solving disputes, handling difficult situations and adopting remedial measures whenever required. E.g. finding out solutions for internal and external conflicts, solving employee related problems.
Negotiator – Expert in collaborating or discussing all relevant factors with external and internal stakeholders. E.g. price negotiations with suppliers, contractual terms, etc (Ramezani et al, 2011).
